Hidden Ninja is a SPECIAL card that says "play BEFORE Base scores"

Does it get played face down on a base and then surprise everyone with it or are you supposed to keep it in your hand until a Base is being scored and then you just toss it out there and add it to your power count?

I've only gotten one play in, but it seems very critical to separate the fact that a base is ready to be scored, and the base actually scores. It seems like very deliberate checking with everyone about specials is important.

So I'm guessing cards can be played even when it's not your turn

We were not sure on the timing of the Specials and even some of the regular Action cards. When is the best time to play Over Run? When Action cards say they end at the end of the Turn, I assume they mean the current players turn?

Cards with the word "Special" in their text can be played when it is not your turn if the conditions on the card are met.

The rules specifically indicate that:
1) You check to see if a base should be scored once the current player is done playing their normal cards (minion, action, and additionals generated). (p4)
2) Once a base has been determined ready to score at this point, it will be scored (as long as it remains in play through the scoring). (p6)
3) Before determining the individual players strength at the base, you begin with the active player and give everyone a chance to play a Special that specifically indicate they should be played "before a base scores" or "prior to scoring a base" until everyone passes. (p6)
4) Once everyone is done playing Special cards, the base is scored. (p6)
5) After the base is scored, other Special abilities may be used. These will specifically say "when" or "after" scoring a base. (p6)
6) Finally, you remove the base and replace it with a new one.

For step 3 in this sequence, do players take turns playing only one special "before scoring" card at at time in player order until everyone passes, or can players play more than one "before scoring card" when it is their opportunity?

I'm not sure it matters much but may in the future with new cards.

If you go on the wording alone it would be just one as it states "give everyone a chance to play a Special...". If it would have said something along the lines of... "give everyone a chance to play any (and/ or all) Special cards..." then I would say you get to play just that, any (and/or all).

The rules (page 9 under Void Where Prohibited) says "If you get to play extra minions or actions while a base is being scored, you must play those extra cards immediately."

Based on this, you can play multiple cards, but you must play them all at once.
