The first time I played this game I played Aliens and Pirates, I tied for victory with a friend of mine and the rules said that we should play another turn. I received an Invader and won the game, my fellow players said that the game was out of balance for overtime if the aliens could win with one card. Did I mess up, is the game unbalanced, or are my friends being sore losers?

At that point, I would've said best two out of three and tricked them into playing it again..and possibly again!

Sour grapes. The rules are very specific on ties as they say keep going until there isn't a tie. It doesn't matter how you do it, just end the turn ahead of the other guy. The lesson here is don't get into a tie with the aliens and this won't happen to you!

Or, if you ar ein a tie with the aliens, ensure you can score a base next turn. Bases will usually outweigh the extra 1 VP from the Invader.

Cave of Shinies allows for a 1-point easy tie-breaker as well for almost any deck as all you need to do is destroy one of your own minions. I'd say invader is in balance just fine.

Going into overtime doesn't reset the rest of the table. If you had been playing Dinosaur Pirates and played King Rex to break a base and win, would that make Dinosaurs unbalanced? Or would playing the Pirate Dinghy card to move other minons to a base for the win make Pirates unbalanced? Or any number of other single cards in any faction...

When it comes down to it, every card game is won by the last card played.

Yeah, sort of like how everything you are searching for is in the last place you look.
