Hi there.

Due to availability and costs, I'm considering either purchasing some board games online and having them shipped to me in the Philippines, or purchasing to a friend in the US then having that person in the US ship them to me. I'd just like to ask what are your experiences on this, particularly regarding the following:

- any particular online retailer that ships directly here
- shipping costs
- FedEx, DHL, Johnny Cargo, or postal office
- going through the postal service (PH), how difficult/annoying is customs and how much?

Any comment is much appreciated.

In other countries I've found that this can be a real headache. What has worked for me previously is finding a person that is coming to visit you/the place you're living and forward them the money/have a game shipped to them. Then, when they come over they just take the games out of the shrink and make it through customs without much issue. The only risk is whether or not the person is actually going to give you the games. It is also only good if you know people coming to visit.

My only advice is to avoid UPS, they give you more headaches than customs could ever throw at you.

Some members in TabletopWars.com buy games abroad and accept orders from others. Checkout the site.

Check out Imagine Games out of Malaysia.

1. It will be far cheaper to ship from there to you.

2. They have a rewards program so depending on how much you buy, you can get pretty good prices.

Good luck!

I've bought from www.Timewellspent.com and they claim to ship anywhere in the world so, most securely they will ship to you. Great fast service.

In my country they charge 15% tax for games, i dunno how much they will charge you, [before a look in the tariff law of philippines, (i actually looked in the law! look in http://www.lawphil.net/statutes/presdecs/pd1978/pd_1464o_197... chapter 96) I think it's like 30-35% unless the law has changed).

Also Funagain, but the prices are higher and you want to save all you can, because most of the times the shipping is high, even in cheap sites (as www.boardsandbits.com).

After all of that, I highly recommend to buy in Online stores in the US, the availability only is what makes it worth it... If you can have a friend ship you the games, much better, a lot of countries don't charge taxes if the package is marked as a gift...

I've bought a Go boardgame set from Japan and it was sent postal, and was charged around 20% of the item value. Funny thing though, the customs guy thought it was a printed circuit BOARD and pc GAME, maybe he couldn't understand that a game would cost more than what some people there would earn in a month.

On the other hand, I'm surprised that it was less hassle than the horror stories I hear about getting through customs.

It would be better though if you send it through a friend and have it shipped to you without the purchase receipt. This is what I normally do with stuff from the US, it's just that this time it was from Japan.

sad experience especially if mailed for 30 days period. Using FedEx or UPS is not much of a hassle but customs here is quiet demanding....

i usually buy from amazon.com, or any of the online stores with free shipping then use a shipping forwarder. i have used these 3 forwarders:

johnny air - ships via air only handling fee per transaction, then fixed rate per pound plus 12% VAT. takes 2 weeks to arrive here in cebu.

pros: no membership fee. there is a local office here in cebu
cons: pick-up only at their offices

my-shoppingbox.com - air and sea shipping. fixed rate per pound. membership required. via air usually arrives 2-3 weeks here in cebu and via sea, around 6-8 weeks.

pros: cheaper rate than johnny air. delivers at home.
cons: membership required (but can be free for 1 year if you're using BDO cc)

pobox.ph - via sea only. per box fee, additional fee for provincial delivery.

pros: the most cost effective for bulk buying. delivers at home
cons: i read that they are not that responsive with the emails, but so far, my emails were replied promptly.

the only online gaming store that i know of here in the philippines is gaminglib.com. if i want a game so badly and want it by the weekend, i order from them. also, if the price difference from using forwarders is not that significantly different. hans is very responsive with the emails

avoid FedEx or UPS, as you'll be subjected to exorbitant custom fees. the shipping forwarders I've used already includes the custom fees in their rates. no hidden/extra charges.

I heartily recommend Hans. He also does a fantastic job supporting the boardgaming hobby.

My personal experience on online orders is not good at all. Had orders before for WH40k stuff and a couple of times the "greediness" of our customs has bit me in the nether regions...

Another recommendation for gaminglib.com here. On the alternative, the Game of Thrones LCG players have done joint orders from miniaturemarket.com, which can ship directly here to the Philippines. Its faster but more expensive though.

on another note, i recently brought promos from the BBG store. it arrived 3 weeks after. you might like some of the promos they have in the store, like that Catan wonder for 7 wonders! hehe got it from the post office and just paid Php40.00.

take note that the promos have free shipping. while expansions have a shipping cost. i ordered promos and an expansion (survive 5-6 players), and i initially thought that shipping cost was the total of all the items. i found out that the shiping cost was just for the expansion.

Depends on order size and speed obviously. But the larger the order, the less the available courier options. IIRC shipping was around 45 dollars ( the only option available) for a 250 dollar order. It arrived a little less than 2 weeks, not counting the time spent waiting for an item to be stocked and email correspondence with miniaturemarket staff in order to verify our order. We also had to pay a "tax" of 2000 pesos at the post office.

i think it's all about the agency that handles the transaction. If you use FedEx UPS won't be having a problem.

The availability of private couriers is subject to the online store itself. Fedex is surprisingly sometimes not an available option (probably due to the closure of their offices here in the Philippines).

You can however, try a forwarding service like forexworld.com. You essentially send it to a US address, fill up a box, then the service forwards your cargo when ready. The option is cheaper than most, but is extremely slow.
