Hey guys.

Like I mentioned in a separate thread, I plan on making my own custom campaign, complete with four new classes. Here's my second class. You can find my first class, the Shadowdancer, in a previous thread.

My Mage class is the Illusionist. Using deception and trickery, the Illusionist uses the Overlord's tools against him. While not as offensive as either the Runemaster or the Necromancer, the Illusionist has a lot of tricks up her sleeve, and is highly mobile.

The Illusionist's main ability is Mirror Image, which allows the Illusionist to split into multiple "images", represented by hero tokens. These images have a number of rules not listed on the Mirror Image card (for the sake of saving space).

Images cannot attack, search, or open doors. Anytime the Illusionist receives movement points by any means, she may move any or all of her images up to the same number of spaces. Otherwise, images count as the Illusionist for all purposes (they block line or sight and movement in the same way as a hero, etc). If an image receives any fatigue, conditions, or damage, it is instead destroyed and removed from the board.

The Illusionist can use Mirror Image to go down multiple paths of a dungeon or trick the Overlord, only choosing which image is the "real" one at the beginning of her next turn, or when there's only one left. At the same time, the Overlord can counter the Illusionist by destroying images she wishes to be false, so that the Illusionist is forced to return to an image in a worse spot!

(Artwork by Leira)

The Illusionist's starting equipment is this Rowan Wand, which has decent range, but less overall damage than most Mage weapons. In return, it uses only one hand, freeing the Illusionist's other hand for other weapons or even a shield.

Many of the Illusionist's skills revolve around making her Mirror Image stronger and more useful. Spirit Shard gives much-needed durability to her images, forcing the Overlord to damage them in order to destroy them. Reflection allows the Illusionist to attack while Mirror Image is active. Finally, Threefold gives the Illusionist three images, rather than two.

Alternately, the Illusionist may focus on making her attacks stronger and more versatile, giving them a blinding effect with Dazzle, making them more flexible with Magic Trick, or giving herself a ton of mobility with Rift Strike.

Finally, the Illusionist can use her enchanting powers to briefly take control of a single monster (similarly to the Overlord's Dark Charm), or to give herself a retaliatory strike when one of her images is targeted by a monster.

Let me know what you guys think! I've only done some preliminary playtesting with this class, but as per usual I tried to play it on the safe side. Giving the Overlord the ability to counteract Mirror Image without adding a "guessing game" makes the ability less overpowered than it otherwise probably would be. That said, if you think any particular card is too powerful or not powerful enough, let me know.

I may eventually add some new items to the shop deck that are Illusionist-oriented, like I did with the Shadowdancer.

Yep. If you look in the files section, I've uploaded a template you can use if you have Photoshop to make class cards of your own. I also have an Item Card template incoming, as well!

This class is great! I can't wait to try it out. Please keep us updated on playtesting. Some thematic items would be a huge plus too if you have time.

Now if only there were a Gnome character...

Another great post keep it up, I do like how your classes are going in a different direction from mine even though we didn't coordinate at all, more choice for the users who are willing to mod their games then.

Haha definitely! While both your Blood Mage and my Illusionist have a "Dominate" ability, they're mechanically different, so they don't overlap too much.

I love these classes purely for the effort you've put into making the cards. Excellent work!

Wow, nice variety! The possibilities for customization and expansion are what I was so excited about after I played Descent 2nd ed the first time.

I'll be keeping a close eye out for your custom campaign... super excited!

My only criticism would be that Dominate doesn't seem to fit the theme of an Illusionist. Maybe instead the Illusionist could extend an illusion to another party member, allowing them to have a mirror image with the same rules and buffs as the Illusionist. Or the ability to create a different illusion of some kind.

But overall this looks very nice, and kudos on the cards.

Maybe change Dominate to Will-o-wisp. Same effect, but the monster is either chasing after a figment, or mistakenly attacking it's own side because it sees what appears to be an enemy.

Due to reasons of my own incompetence, I haven't been able to make a template for the backs of the cards, so I don't have a solution for that yet.

This is a very cool class, good job!

Rift Strike
This seems strong compared to the Thief's Tumble skill.

Dazzle
Blindness seems like it could use similar mechanics to Stealth, is there a reason you went with the Shadow Dragon ability instead? It seems like all of these should use the same mechanic.

You're right about Rift Strike. I suppose you could say that Tumble is still useful in that you don't have to attack in order for it to work, but meh. Rift Strike's definitely better. Do you think it should be 2 fatigue?

That being said, I think tumble isn't very powerful as it is, so maybe Rift Strike is where it should be. (shrug)

As for Dazzle, I think Stealth is much stronger than Shadow, so I think it's better this way... Plus, not everybody has access to the conversion kit, so not everybody is familiar with Stealth.

Actually I think Shadow is stronger than Stealth in this case since monsters cannot normally generate surges.

Using Red+Blue attack dice:
There is a 47% chance that the melee attack will overcome Shadow.
There is a 67% chance that the melee attack will overcome Stealth (range 3).

I love this class idea. Seriously.
It's original with some bold design right there, it allows for some mind games, and it looks like a lot of fun to play.

I honestly think that it surpasses any class from the base game and that I have made myself, as far as the fun factor is concerned.

5d100 thumbs up.

Hi Feonix, I'm overlording an official campaign in the 'play-by-forums' section, and one of our heroes opted to try out your illusionist class. Here is the url if anyone is interested to see it in action: http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/893470/descent-campaign-vi/p.... So far the only complaint was the lack of power in the wand and no offhand but after reading your description I see what you were going for.

If you were to add an off-hand/trinket to this class, what would you consider?

Also reading through your class cards, it all looks really well thought out. Good job!

Re: Feonix's custom Descent class #2 - the Illusionist
Hi Feonix,

I'm play testing the illusionist in Zerrian's link listed above and I had a quick question about the damage.

So we're playing the image as though they have no defense die and accordingly the damage done to the image does not pass to the Illusionist. The question is what happens when both images are swept by an Ettin Master Giant for example.

1. Who chooses which image is the real image?
2. Does any damage carry on to the real Illusionist, in this case since both are hit with the sweep? Or does the sweep merely cancel out both images and the Illusionist figure is replace with no damage taken? And if damage does pass on, shouldnt a defense dice be rolled in that case?

Thanks ahead for any response to my questions.
