I had a chance to demo (and play for the first time) Fleet. Admittedly, when I saw the game on Kickstarter, the theme completely didn't appeal to me. However, upon playing the game, the mechanics are interesting enough that I don't mind the fishing theme.
This is quite the easy card game to pick up and play when there is some down time between games or while waiting for others to arrive to the table. With rules explanations, our game lasted 45 minutes. Fleet plays extremely fast if you know what you are doing. It only takes a couple of turns to get going.
We played a three player game, which adds to the auction strategy of the licenses. It was a slow start for myself as I spent a little too much in the first turn on a tuna license, but it paid for itself almost immediately. I began my comeback, grabbing cards and licenses. Eventually I had a nice combo going gaining cards for launching boats and for having captains on top of the cards from the tuna license. By the end of the game, I had a true fleet on the seas with 7 ships fishing for me and almost all of them were full of fish.
One of my opponents had trouble getting money. Eventually she picked up a processing plant to start making money with the fish crates, but that also robbed her of VP in the end.
My other opponent fared much better and came close to my score, but my bonuses for captains from a king crab license really pushed my score out of reach by the end of the game.
We all had a great time playing and would definitely play it again.
