Two Gate Opening and 8 Ally Start - House Rule
Incredible game. Fought off two Rumors, survived a LnTnS and had to wait out a mystic storm which didn't allow us to seal gates. It took us 32 mythos actions to survive a terror level @ 9 and two DOOM markers away from an impossible battle against ShubNiggaurath.
The game started fair with Vincent Lee closing a gate from the start. Joe Diamond soon followed with a quick 5 clue seal and Amanda Sharpe collecting items and clue tokens. We were chugging along until Good Work Undone consumed about 14 clue tokens due a persistent Mystic fog which kept adding the difficulty of this rumor (ie rolling 1&2). It was finally defeated but the investigators suffered a number of monster surges and Doom track climbs. By the time they had fended off the rumor two buildings had closed and all but 2 Allys had run from town.
The GOO was determined and pummeled us with another rumor which required us to sacrifice our only Ally to survive a few more turns. We quickly handled that knowing that our time was running short.
Arkham was looking grim. Diamond needed a turn to scurry for clues. Amanda had been LnTnS while in the Dreamlands - due to a most horrific monster. The only fortunate event for some time was a very timid Lee who uncovered an Elder Sign in a Another World. Likely left by a prior sleuth who met his Maker. After using the Elder sign and having 5 clues remaining we were well on our way towards a final gate seal push!
However, another two turns later with Lee on his exit toward sealing a gate and Diamond on his final quest to seal the 7th - Shub-Nigguraths cultists summoned a nasty mystic storm that left all investigators thinking "No One Can Help Us [You] Now". Diamond and Lee conquered the gates but had to wait out the storm, gates could be closed, but not sealed! With only two gates left to seal - this was a most unfortunate event.
Another surge by Shub Niggurath sent one more gate open, two more monster surges and suddenly we were two knocks away from Shub Niggurath being unleashed. ... Then from no where Nodens Favor came out and gave relief. Lee successfully sealed the Gate that had dominated over the historical society and Diamond was able to conjure up the final breath to fight off the seal which claimed the Unnameable.
It was victory alas. A silver lining with every storm - thanks to Noden. Whose name will never be forgotten.
NOTE: This game really was hard; we had to fight off two Rumors with the most horrific being an at-one-time 8 token Good Work Undone which would have removed up to three elder sign seals. This left Arkham running a muck with Monsters and gates. But the final effort to take over Arkham occurred when we weren't allowed to seal gates - this occurred right at the time we were about to seal the last two gates to claim victory. At the advice of Amanda Sharpe we agreed to wait out that Mythos Environment and hope for 'brighter days' when Nodens Favor helped remove the "seal" curse.
