Situation: In the early part the battle, the Lannisters, surrounded by Starks, attempted to capture Lady Stark for a quick win. The attempts, however, were mowed down by Robb Stark's cavalry unit.

The Lannisters eventually organized into a tough defense and, in the previous round, damaged Karstark's unit and broke the Starks' northern line of command. The momentum shifted and the Lannisters clawed their way back to the victory-point race.

The Lannisters are now planning to break the Stark's northern line and capture Karstark before the Stark's southern forces can join the fight. While outnumbered and surrounded, the Lannisters have superior leadership where the battle will be decided.

(NOTES: The pictures are shot from north-to-south (ie, upside down; north is at the bottom -- south is up top). The session was played several months ago. The descriptions below are based on what I remember from these pics.

(1) Karstark is damaged and, due to his placement, exerts little control over his forces. He is also exposed to a flanking attack.

(2) A Stark elite infantry is also exposed to a flaking attack. While there's a full-strength Stark elite infantry unit in the adjacent forest hex, the entire Stark line is out of leadership ZOC. Robb Stark is off to the right of the picture defending Catelyn from enemy cavalry.

(3) A Stark elite cavalry from the south is sent to harass the Lannisters from the rear.

(2.1) One of the main goals of the Lannister offensive fails as Karstark's unit is not damaged further, but instead is forced to retreat.

(2.2) The Lannister offensive also fails to break the Stark line. Good news for the Lannisters is that the elite Stark cavalry at the rear is nearly destroyed by Lannister cavalry returning to the main fight. The Lannister cav was previously feinting a raid on Lady Stark and holding Robb Stark (still out of the picture) in defense, away from the main fight. The Lannister's cav movement, however, frees Robb to also return to the main fight.

(2.3) A remnant of Lannister cavalry lead by Adam Marbrand appears to be caught by the Starks. As shown in this pic, the Lannisters have 2 or 3 turns before the southern Starks arrive in strength. If they are to break the northern Starks, it has to be done real soon.

(3.1) The Lannisters continue their unlucky streak as their western units take heavy damage from lesser Stark troops. They are now dangerously close to collapse. Karstark sees a chance at smashing a Lannister elite heavy unit and charges in.

(3.2) The Lannister cavalry crush what remained of the Stark cav. The Stark cav, however, did accomplish its mission , which was to help dillute the Lannister's western strength.

(4) A rare moment of valor: A bloodied Adam Marbrand escapes the Stark southern troops, joins the main fight, then single-handidly fends off the approaching Stark mass from the south.

End-game

(5.1) Robb Stark returns to battle (bottom right), but is beaten back badly by the Lannister cav (not pictured). The full-strength elite Stark infantry in the center finally activates and eliminates the Lannister cav that embarassed Robb. The Stark infantry has the initiative and finally collapses the zone's remaining Lannister infantry -- and captures Kevan Lannister.

(5.2) The Lannister's chances, though quickly getting slimmer, still rely on taking out Karstark and whatever exposed Stark units they can find. Jamie finally joins the front and knocks Karstark off his keester. Tit-for-tat!

(5.3) Karstark's downfall is only a small concession for the Lannisters, however. Unfortunately, all Stark units ripe for the plucking are out of range. ... The southern Stark forces, now with The Greatjon at the vanguard, again attept to push through Adam Marbrand. This time they succeed. Marbrand falls, and so do the Lannisters. Ball game.

Could'a Should'a

The session was decided early on when the Lannisters found themselves in a massive victory-point hole after sending suicide squads after Lady Stark. While they were able to tighten-up the margin by mid-game, they had lost too many units to be effective on offense. They could've, at least, focused northward into the forest hexes to maximize their defense.

Jaime should've come out much, much sooner. If pushing wholly and agressively at one end of the battle, this could be a winnable scenario for the Lannisters.

While the Starks won, the session showed the importance of effective leadership placement. Their northern line (with both Robb and Karstark off at the edges) was at risk while the southern force lumbered its way to the scene.
