Hi,

I am Bulgarian living in Sofia. I am sorry to disappoint you, but you won't find any game shops here. Maybe a few Monopoly-like games in major book shops, but that's all...

About gaming in Bulgaria in general - people of all ages play Backgammon. We have 3 different varieties, usually all 3 are played in a sequence. Also, the place in front of the National Theather in Sofia is a place for playing Chess and Backgammon, often with a small bet.

Not much board game culture beyond that...

Regards,
Bo

So, let me get this straight: Bulgaria has given the world, among many other things, some of history's greatest bassos, and all we give them in return is FFG? Not quite fair, I think!

Thanks for the appreciation

Unfortunatelly, that's the situation here at the moment - we are a small country, in which the modern board games are not popular at all. But that's not a problem really, because after we became a member of EU it is quite easy to buy things at good prices and minimal shipping costs from online boardgame shops like the german ones

It's a good a idea to make a list of the places where one can buy modern board games in Bulgaria. Here are the ones I know about.

* Sofia:
- Pikko Games (www.pikko-games.com), 31 Neofit Rilski street. This is a small boardgame-dedicated shop. It is possible to order games.
- Fantasmagoria Ltd (www.fantasmagoria.bg , www.bigbag.bg). A boardgame importer with good prices, which also aims to translate games into Bulgarian. See Alex's post below.
- Club "The Game" (www.boardgames-bg.com/thegame), 75 Krum Popov street. As it says, it is a gaming club with ample space to play. But it's also a shop with a quite large selection and reasonable prices.
- Paladium Games (www.paladium-games.com). The major store is in Strelbishte quarter, block 19 (at Bulgaria blvd.). An importer of CCG's and board games. Their online store is at www.cardpile.com . Prices are usually a bit higher. There is a new store and club at 30 Yuriy Gagarin street, block 98. It is more "boardgame-friendly", i.e. there you can find people playing games other than Magic.
- Magic Worlds, Slaveikov square, in one of the bazaars. Paladium dealer.
- Ciela bookstore chain (www.ciela.bg, a list of stores is at www.ciela.bg/?p=bookshop). Carries games from various importers.
- Orange center (www.orange-bg.com), 18 Graf Ignatiev street, 2nd floor. Carries games from various importers.
- Booktrading bookstore chain, (www.booktrading.bg, has a list of stores). Only German games with rules translated in Bulgarian, at very good prices.

I don't know any stores in towns other than Sofia. I suppose that since Ciela/Orange/Booktrading are chains and have stores in other towns, they maybe offer board games there too. Also, the bookstore chain "Pingvinite" (www.pingvinite.bg) offers board games, but these are more children-oriented games (like Monopoly) translated in Bulgarian.

* Online
- www.pikko-games.com - Pikko Games' online shop
- www.cardpile.com - Paladium Games' online shop
- intelligames.bg - importer and translator of the Catan line
- www.mbgtoys.com - MBG Toys is another company which imports games. It also translates some games (e.g. Citadels). Their games are mostly found in the bookstores, at their site they list only BattleLore and Ticket to Ride.
- www.ozone.bg - a large online shop for video games, which also carries some boardgames from Paladium.

---
Edits:
- added new Paladium store
- added "The Game" club

Unfortunately Pikko Games, Orange, Paladium is way to expensive.

The best prices in Bulgaria can be found at Booktrading Bookstore, its a chain, their biggest shop is in serdika mall.

I am Greek, working here, so any info regarding any new board game shop in Sofia, is welcome.

Also some review on Magic Worlds and Ciela would be great.

Thanks

Hallo guys! I'm Alexandar Guerov the owner of Fantasmagoria Ltd. in Sofia.
Nice to see some people really cared about the development of the board and card game community in our small country.

I want to tell you just a few things – First of all - don’t be so pessimistic. Our small shop has at the moment a good starting range of board, card and some children games, but this is not so important. Really important is our main goal – to take care of the Bulgarian gamers community, with events, new titles and so much support as possible (because our team is still very small and we cannot do, everything we want to…but we will grow with the time)
I just want to make one thing clear – we are not only a board game shop, we are the first serious board game publisher of licensed games in the country. We are not the first one, some other companies have tried before us , and after a title or 2 they just gave up. In the first year of our existence as a publisher we brought CARCASSONNE and directly 4 expansions on the market in Bulgarian language! In the second we have published A GAME OF THRONES: The Board Game 2nd edition also in Bulgarian language (we had many other plans for the same year, but unfortunately the factory in Germany doesn’t had the capacity in 2011, because of a very special situation there… ).
However – meanwhile we are the official partner for Bulgaria from FFG (all other companies are buying and reselling games in Europe, we buy DIRECTLY games in original language from FFG and we translate and localize Bulgarian editions from many publishers worldwide and we try to give you the best possible prices ever on this market. Just be patient – this year we have many surprises for you – KINGDOMS from FFG, VILLAGE from EGGERTSPIELE, MONDO – PEGASUSSPIELE, WIZARD, WIZARD- EXTREME and WIZARD JUNIOR from AMIGO, CARCASSONE ANOTHER - 4 EXPANSIONS from HANS IM GLUECK, HUNTERS AND GATHERERS from AMIGO are all in PRODUCTION RIGHT NOW in Bulgarian language !!! And those are the plans for the first half of the year! In the second half we plan to bring THE SID MEIER'S CIVILIZATION and maybe RUNE AGE from FFG on the market and many more…
Now I want to make another thing clear – publishing games is not like importing some copies from an European storehouse! It is an investment and engagement and obligation! It takes time and I want to ask you for some patience and your support, but in a few years we will have a quite different situation in Bulgaria, I promise you that and I will keep that promise. We will do it together, let’s support each other, because everybody knows at the moment we are still a small community!
By the way – we supply many of the shops and chains, you have mentioned, like ORANGE, CIELA, BOOKTRADING, PIKKO and so on, they are all our partners and we will supply them in the future too, with all the new localized editions of the new games. Unfortunatelly our web site is not always up to date (I have to exuse myself for that), because we don’t have sufficient time in the moment for this activity – we are really concentrated in publishing new games, to make sooner a bigger portfolio for you – but you can order online at www.fantasmgoria.bg or much better shop in our new real online shop – www.BigBag.bg – both web sites are connected , but fantasmagoria is a site only for a representative purposes and will be updated not so quick, BigBag.bg will be the real online shop for Bulgarian and original card and board games in the future…

O.K. I’ve explained enough for the beginning – just to show you – we have bigger plans, that you can imagine in the moment and you will hear for sure about Fantasmagoria in the next years!

…. and don’t forget – this summer the winter is coming !

Greetings,
Alex!

Поздрави...

Re: Gaming in Bulgaria
You can find many of the new games in English (and none in Bulgarian) at BoardGames.BG, prices are the same as everywhere in Europe, shipping is as cheap as it gets in Bulgaria. Own import, so prices are usually lower that usual for the country.

Most of the Magic players are fluent in English. Problem is that the biggest BG communities actually play at homes and not clubs. You'll have best chances in Fri/Sat/Sun at "The Game", there is plenty of people to play games with there during the weekend. Club's calendar is in Bulgarian, but you can check for events before going there - keep in mind most of the spontaneous events don't make it to the calendar and during the business days (Mon-Thu) there is mostly occasional Magic, HeroClix, AGOT and Netrunner players, some demos and the usual small group board games, but rarely huge groups of players. The staff speaks English and I can vote the same for at least half of the players.
