Today was our first play of this recent release. A review will be forthcoming but Glory is essentially a resource management, structure buildinng, wealth accumulation and role taking game. We consider San Juan on 'roids.

I had spent a good amount of time reading the manual. Some people have taken issue with its clarity but I actually found it to be helpful and relatively unambiguous. However, the game is not obviously intuitive, as we at MIT like to say (disclaimer Chudyk is an MIT grad; I'm an MIT grad student currently - but we know each other not)

The session was interesting. I was able to jump into the game, but I found that explaining it to my fiance was more diffficult than I had imagined. Moreover, frustration quickly ensued in trying to explain that each card basically does a few things: denotes a structure, indicates a role, represent influence, and represents building material. I like this game alot because of its streamlined design - I find it to be very clever, but it does pose a barrier of entry, which is a shame because I'd play this over San Juan pretty much any day.

The game was a close game, ending 11 to 9. We played the full version (ignoring the purple notes in the instruction manual) minus the role of the structures we built.

I can say now, that the game plays very well with two players. I'll post a review soon when we have a couple of games under out belt, but for now, it gets a serious thumbs up.

Sorry about that, Chief

The "Number of Players" range on most games has more to do with marketing than true playability. G2R, however, is a really great game at 2-5 players, without crippling downtime or AP issues. The only black mark against it is the difficulty of teaching/learning it - you just have explain and play a few turns and offer to restart once the lightbulbs go on.

Yup, this pretty much replaces San Juan for me. You might want to keep an eye out for the upcoming Race For The Galaxy, which lands in between G2R and San Juan complexity-wise, but I prefer G2R.

Thanks for the heads up on Galaxy. I just looked at it and it indicates 3-5 players. Any idea if there is a viable 2-player variant?

Re: Thumbs up
Race to the Galaxy includes specific 2 player rules. It has a small change to the rules which are similar to the way San Juan handles it. GtR works fine for two players without any rules changes.
