Giro Galoppo at first seems to be a very easy children game with very beautiful made riders and horses. And yes, these riders, horses and its obstacles can be used to play on its own! But the fun doesn't stop there.
The game has much more to offer. It is a fun quick racing game and is as much fun as En Garde or it's remake Duell by Reiner Knizia, only THIS game can be played by up to 5 people.
But let's start at the beginning:
Components:
Wooden riders, horses and obstacles, 6 cards for each player and a beautiful map to play on. Top quality! As there are horses I have heard severall times that this game is aimed to little girls. This might be true, but: This game should be played by everybody!
Rules:
As this is a children game, the rules are very short and precise and easy to grasp. Good job by Selecta!
Gameplay:
Each player plays one of its cards which are enumarated from 1 to 6!
Lower cards move first, higher cards later. If two players play the same card, the rider who is behind moves first. If one would land on an obstacle, the card is just discarded and the rider doesn't move. If the rider lands on a field, which is occupied by another rider, the rider gets pushed back to the last unoccupied field.
This is very clever, as it allows the riders in the back to hurt the leader, as the rider in the front may be pushed back.
The game ends when at least one rider crosses the finishing line. It wins the player with its rider most advanced when the game is over.
One game is about 10 - 12 turns!
Overall:
This game just shines. It has some very nice tactical decisions, that must be made, and the fact that everybody keeps to play his cards in the hand until no card is left, leaves enough room for also some strategic decisions. This sort of feeling, of thinking what the other players might do and therefore deciding which cards to play are prominent on another game:Duell.
This game plays differently, but has the same feel. I think, everybody liking Duell, might enjoy this game alot too.
When this game is played by 4-5 persons it just shines. WOW, what more can be asked by a game than 10-12 turns of pure nailbiting and backstabbing?
I personally think, this game deserves a reissue as adult game. It's that much fun!
Kudos to Selecta and it's designer: Jürgen P. Grunau
