What I really do not get is why Microsoft wants PR to be removed from BSW.

I can't speak for Microsoft, but I do know this: In the console video game world, exclusivity is very important.

I don't know if that's actually Microsoft's reasoning or not, though.

Chris

Do we even know for certain that Microsoft is responsible? Seriously, isn't Catan still available on BSW?

The XBL system has NOTHING to fear from a little known, tiny little back water site like BSW. Most of the people that play on XBL (in america, at least) have never heard of BSW, and never will. On top of that, BSW doesn't offer:

1) Voice chat
2) Integrated friends lists and messaging
3) Achievements
4) The comfort of playing via console

At the least.

Personally speaking, I'd rather play on BSW. However, I'm a PC gamer at heart and respect the roots of german digital board gaming. Most XBL members really don't give a toss about PC gaming (i.e. their preference is console, at least). Either way, I'd take playing it table top over BSW any day.

ps: The position of experience I speak from regarding the XBL community is due to the fact I was nigh on obsessed with it till Settlers broke the spell (Mayfair version, but it was the pre-release xbox press that peaked my interest). I found my way here, fell into the arms of many new titles and have never looked back. I've got nearly 3,000 posts over at Team Xbox's forum and have had my 360 since launch (incidentally, I just had her die on me 2 days ago - but that's ok, she was collecting dust next to Puerto Rico, Caylus, Pillars of the Earth, Settlers, Arkham Horror and similar games).

Man.. board games are *soooooo* much more exciting than 95% of anything being released digitally these days (notable exceptions: Spore, Mass Effect, Fallout 3, Assassins Creed, GTA 4, bIO Shock, Half Life 2 pack).

I'd take a game of Pillars or Puerto Rico over Oblivion any day (a game I've logged over 100 hours in).

:)

So, Catan is available on BSW and XBL, and PR has gone from BSW due to someone buying the digital rights. Some questions:

1. Can anyone definatively confirm that M$ are the someone that bought the rights to PR online?
2. Does M$ have similar rights on Catan or different in some way?
3. Has anyone at BSW tried to find out if they can provide PR at least until it comes out on XBL, or whoevers platform has bought the rights?
4. Has anyone tried to persuade BSW or asked on their behalf?

The statement by BSW did not indicate that they had been asked by Alea or the new rights holder to stop providing PR online. It may be that they pre-emptively took it down, fearing the corporate might of someone like M$.

What really p*sses me off is that now I can play PR online nowhere. If the new rights holder is responsible for this it is a sure fire way to motivate me to hate them and never buy any of their products again. I'm sure we'd all agree it would be beneficial to all to leave PR on BSW until it is available on another platform.

I nevered played PR on BSW but how was the interface? The only non-boardgame PR I tried on my PC was the evolver and the curls application. If anyone have screenshots, then I'll know what I missed that everyone regards as one of the best PR online service.

Hmmm, PR and Settlers are different games. The BSW Settlers interface was inherently clunky due to the way trades are handled in Settlers. Nothing BSW did could have fixed that. Having a microphone is a big improvement for Settlers.

PR doesn't have any trading among players and it doesn't have any inate need for a microphone. The BSW interface for PR was good. Having a microphone could be bad because it encourages whining and collusion.

1. Yes
2. Definitely different rights as the main catan realm is Klaus Teubers Catan Online World. Only basic Catan is available at BSW as they were first, in fact BSW, formerly called MIllenium gate, was invented by ARMistice as a way to play Catan online. Catan online world was/is also programme by Alex and his friends.
3. Difficult to get word from M$ as the rights owner. That for example is the reason why Acquire with in fact was at BSW(if you look at players stats and see an entry --- that can be Acquire)
4. I spoke with Alex and in his opinion it is best not take any risk there

1. yes, is the correct answer.
2. I cannot say how the rights are different, but can imagine they are.
3. Microsoft has offered BSW via Alea (about 4-6 weeks ago - shortly after it was removed) to continue to offer PR until Microsoft is ready to offer it (likely on X-Box). I do not know why BSW has not yet restored it. That decision remains with them, I believe.
4. As above, BSW has been told they may restore PR nd keep it there until Microsoft is ready to offer PR on their own. No need for BSW to contact anyone at this point.

Sorry for not replying sooner - i've been away.

That sounds great news, but I don't see PR back on BSW :( Microsofts offer does them credit, especially when people are often eager to bash them. I hope BSW bring it back, especially as Microsofts offering may sit on the shelf for a long time, as these things often do.

If anyone has any contact or influence on BSW, would they please please please ask them to check the offer from Microsoft and put PR back.

The interface was simple (some might say a little crude), but beautifully succint, IMHO. Example can be seen here: http://privat.ub.uib.no/bubjb/englishTOwn/help/PR.jpg

Interface on BSW was quite good.
The graphic was a bit rough, but at least in my opinion it didn't lead to any misclicks.

Microsoft "allowing" BSW to put PR back online won't be enough.
Afaik BSW is only featuring games they get paid for. It's sad, but I can understand BSW for not breaking their policy even for this great game. Otherwise all the others paying for their games online would quickly wonder why they DO have to pay...
