Weird, clicking on the game shows the game page and you are listed as one of the designers, but clicking on your name takes you to your designer page where Arclight is not listed. Why is this so? Does only the first mentioned designer get the credit on their designer page? Not that this is something I expect you can fix by yourself of course meeple

Ooowww. I like that!

Congrats Donald.

Are you into woodworking or is this a one-off? I have a soft spot for wooden versions, and there is still a pile with crummy plastic versions kicking around somewhere here that I'd love to turn "deluxe". Heck, I have even bought games I knew I don't particularly care for, sometimes again, just because it looked so darn nice.

What wooden game would you love to get?

What game would you love to make from wood yourself?

Have you seen any other home-made wooden versions here that made you go woaw?

And if there was one game you could get made in an over the top wooden production, which one would it be?

Thanks! It is amazing what you can do with a table saw and no grasp of actual carpentry skills.

BigWoo wrote:

I've built several display/shadow boxes for my bloodbowl teams. I've also built a funky custom wooden TV stand/media center. But I would say I'm a creative novice, not a skilled woodworker.

What wooden game would you love to get? Master ThievesI like boxes.

What game would you love to make from wood yourself?

I'd like to do a nice leather map for Condottiere. But a pure wood set? Crokinole, or Cat Bowling. My brother made a very nice Cat Bowling set for my nephew - it was a shuffleboard game with wooden cats you tried to knock down. Very neat indeed.

Have you seen any other home-made wooden versions here that made you go woaw?
Here? there are some cool ones, but mostly when I see them I think about how I could make it instead of remembering what it was or where I saw it. I'm a bit scatterbrained that way. When I was organizing events back in OKC someone had a great big Ikusa hand painted wooden board, painted miniatures, metal swords, and real money. It was very sharp indeed.

And if there was one game you could get made in an over the top wooden production, which one would it be?

Hmmm, scale models of the eight pirate ships from Santy Anno would be great.

Nice choices.

Oh, and I'll bite, since no-one else seems to and I'm getting curious. What is it about pirates?

If you make it to the end of the week without listing your top 3 pirate games, novels, movies and top 3 pirates full stop (in order) I'm gonna be so disappointed.

BTW, have you heard of "Rogues Gallery" a 2 cd set full of pirate songs, sea songs and chanteys?

Pirates are so last year. Nowadays Vikings are the new pirates.

Actually, I like pirates because of the musical heritage, the freedom they represent, and the fact you can dress up like a pirate for Renfaires here in the USA and then go and drink heavily and it's all in character. I prefer Vikings, but I can at least understand pirate music.

BigWoo wrote:

Favorite Pirate novel:
On Stranger Tides, by Tim Powers. I don't know that I've read any other. Any Suggestions?

Movies:
Yellowbeard
Muppet Treasure Island
Pirates http://imdb.com/title/tt0091757/

I really like the old "serious" pirate movies, but right now I'm in a stress reduction state of mind, so these fun movies came to mind first. (My Tivo often has some kind of strange pirate movie on it.)

Pirates:
Edward Teach - Blackbeard, and no apologies for it, he's da bomb.
Anne Bonnie
William Dampier, a real working pirate.

Rum:
I'll drink rum, but I'll rarely buy rum, being a true pirate I prefer to drink other people's rum. Here again I'll state I like vikings better than pirates, this time because their drinks are better. http://walsfeo.com/mead/index.htm
The music group Ceann has a great song about mead, and another fun song about pirates. http://ceannmusic.com/

Games:
Sad news is I haven't bought any pirate games over the past two and a half years because of grad school, I've been busy and poor. This means I've only had brief exposure to other peoples (new) pirate games, not enough to develop a real feel for them.

I enjoyed Blackbeard back in the 90s, it is very pirate centric. I think I'd still like it. Pirate's Coveis a hoot, and deals enough with pirate themes, that I'd have to actually count it as a pirate game. Santy Anno: Blackbeard at the Puband Rum & Pirates are fun and have a thin veneer of pirate theme, but are not what I would call real pirate games.

I do plan to review any pirate games I get in the On Board Games podcast.

BigWoo wrote:

I don't have any of their disks, but I have several other groups, Poxy Boggards, Corsairs, Pyrates Royale, Bilge Pumps, and so on. I'll have to check out the Rogues Gallery.

Some questions-

Thanks. And your question is tough. Sort by date? geeeze... Oh wait, I can do that on my profile. This became much easier.

1. What is your favorite game first published between 1980-1989 and why?
Ht eighties has no good games, it is dead to me.

Actually that time frame is much tougher, but going by my ratings I guess I'd have to say HeroQuest, but then again I play RPGs as well as board games.

2. What is your favorite game first published between 1970-1979 and why?

Cosmic Encounter, it is wacky, it is always different, and it is about breaking the rules within the rules. We played it a lot when I was in high school. Junta would probably be a close second.

3. What is your favorite game first published between 1960-1969 and why?

Bazaar, a neat "exchange" game

4. What is your favorite game that was ever created between the rise of humankind and 1959?
Diplomacy, but lets look further back than that -

The favorite since the rise of mankind game I know? Chess. Though I'd probably like Dou Shou Qi, Shogi, or other "ancient" games as well. Why? the only randomness is the other player, and I like that in a game.

So a few questions for you:
- What is your favorite image that you've uploaded to this site?
- Do you ever see yourself designing boardgames as your primary way of making a living - like 20 years down the road?
- What do you think are the 3 most overrated games on this site?
- What do you think your next microbadge purchase will be?
- Do you ever play games online? Would you want to start a game of E&T to play with me and a couple of others?

Have a super week Dennis.

Ew, I had to go look at all my images, some of those are pretty awful.
is probably the most useful

Is the most fun, a kid really enjoying playing games. That's what it's all about, isn't it?

Is the one I probably like the best, because it's of a game board I created and it looks pretty sharp.

- Do you ever see yourself designing boardgames as your primary way of making a living - like 20 years down the road?

Occasionally I suffer from delusions.
But really I'd like to put out a few games that people like without having to rehash things over and over to make a living. However it would be nice to be rich enough that I could take the time to make enough different kinds of games that it wouldn't seem like I'm releasing the same game over and over.

- What do you think are the 3 most overrated games on this site?
Without even looking at them it would have to be the top three. And owch, I like two of the top three quite a bit. Tigris & Euphratesis one of my favorite games. But it is still probably over rated.

- What do you think your next microbadge purchase will be?
Hopefully an On Board Games badge. I wanted one that expressed I like American Games without saying Ameritrash, but was told that wouldn't be happening. That pretty much disgusted me with the whole process and since then I've quit paying attention to them.

I'd be honored if I could get a Golden Meeple, though I have no idea what is required for that kind of thing.

Now we never met until I was in College. FFA has middle school and high school members as well. Don't you remember the BLT's we served up for the SD day at my parent's house? Those were from home grown pigs, not at my home, but my Uncle grew em.

Interesting! So if you've rated T&E a 10, but still think it's overrated, do you think there are any games out there (or still to be created) that better deserve the 10 rating? Or does your rating scale go to 11?

While we're at it, what are the top 3 games you feel are underrated here on BGG?

My ratings are generally a willingness to play the game, not an absolute value statement.

Overall ratings may or may not have anything to do with quality related to all of the other games. It just means people want to play those games.
Die Macher is an amazing game, but because people wouldn't want to play it every day it is not a 10. Mechanically I find it a more satisfying game than Puerto Rico, but on an average week night I'd rather play Puerto Rico.

I love T&E it's a game I find interesting and would play it any time. But I'm still kinda shocked when I find out how many other people feel the same way. When I first played the game I was probably it's biggest enthusiast in the local game group.

That being said, I find Caylus to be the single most overrated game, possibly followed by Puerto Rico. Caylus is the 100 layer dip of board games, but it seems like not all of those layers go together. The game does not seem to be a unified whole, but more like they were stacking mechanics until they had a game.

Under rated? I dunno, but some games I wish had higher ratings.

Shark, but then I'd like more variant boards for Shark. I'll have to post the variant I made sometime soon.

Show Manager. I like the mechanics of this one so much I own two copies. I'm developing another game with a similar set of mechanics that are one facet of the game. If playtests show it to be different enough I'll see what the original designer thinks about it. (I'm not a full time developer, my livelihood does not depends on game sales, but I still want to maintain good graces within the industry.)

Star Trek Red Alert Great game, would have been better if it were not collectible, but just a single packaged game. I may even have an unpunched complete set of this back home in storage.

Mythos. My favorite CCG, I have a complete set, and lots of unopened boosters. Lots. (I wish I had the other Cthulhu CCG, but I didn't have any money when it came out, so I avoided it.

Zoon was a fun Stratego like game that is much better than the rating might lead you to believe.

The geek could probably do with a multiple facet rating systems.
Production Value
Mechanical Soundness There are games with perfectly sound mechanics I don't find appealing.
Clarity of rules
ease of play
Suitable for X players
Fun for game length. (I love short games of Robo Rally, but people always want to use to many boards, making the game suck.)

Hmm, looks like my GotW is falling flat, so instead of waiting on you guys to ask me questions, I'm going to turn it into a game.

I have not yet decided who will be the next GotW, so you all have a chance to help decide. Point out to me people who have made great contributions to BGG, either from humor, uploading useful files, asking insightful questions, diffusing heated arguments, or whatever.

From this point on, you can make suggestions about who you'd like to have as the next GotW, but it has to be accompanied by a link of something they've posted and a short description so I know what I'm looking for.

Post the links or whatever here.

Yes you may nominate yourself.
No I don't have to agree with the person about anything.

The only restrictions are:
The person to end up as the next GotW are the same as for a normal pick.
Nobody who has been GotW before.
Someone I do not know in real life and have never met
Someone from the other side of the world. So in this case it should be someone not from North America. So Europe, Asia, Africa, or Australia, or somewhere like that would be good.

If I don't come up with any suitable candidates by the end of the week I may just auction it off for geek gold.

NOOOOO - Don't cheapen this honor by auctioning it off!!!!

So, I'll give a couple suggestions as to who may make a great next Geek of the Week.

First off: Karlsen (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/user/Karlsen)
He's from Australia, and should be known by just about anyone who's ever posted anything. He has over 3000 forum replies (including the ones in this thread, has tagged over 4000 things, and arguably has the cutest avatar of anyone. And of course, his wife Melissa is a very active BGG member as well. Here's a link to his Geeklists:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/lists/user/Karlsen

Second suggestion: mikehibbert (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/user/mikehibbert)
He's a very active gamer from England, who has his own gaming website for the UK (http://www.thegamescape.co.uk) along with a podcast, and has been an occasional contributer to The Dice Tower podcast. He has good insightful commentary, and is very pleasant to communicate with.

There's my 2 cents for the next GW.
