Europe Engulfed » Forums » Reviews
A shorth review after only 3 games.
Perhaps it is foolish to talk about a game after only 3 games, but I want to talk about my impresions.

- About ETO warfare at the strategic level, I have played the original AH "Third Reich", "World in Flames" and "John Prado´s Third Reich". I think that the last edition of "Third Reich" is flawed. My opinion and experience, not offence intended. For example, in that Game Germany can declare the war on Portugal. Only declaring it ( even if there are no units capable to attack Portugal )is often enought to allow Spain to enter the war on the German Side. And then Spain invades Portugal. I am Spanish, I have read a little about History, and I was dissapointed. My years as a "World in Flames" Player are gone. It is extremely time consuming. But now, EE offers me an excelente game to "recreate" WW2 in Europe in a fast an easy to learn and play way. We can play the whole war in 2 6-7 hour sessions, or a intensive day of wargaming

- Blocks are EXCELLENT in a game like this. Now you cant take a look at the Soviets before deciding to attack or not. I wonder why there are so few block wargames. Wood is cheap.

-It works well to recreate the historical feeling. Perhaps there is too little way to "change history" ( for example, preventive strike against Italy, not allowing the Soviet to Attack in 1941 if there are 5 one step blocks in the frontier ), but it works well, very well.

-Simplified air and naval warfare is a must if you want to speed play. Perhaps allowing some kind of Interdiction in the supply phase would be Ok... In 1940 the Med is usually an Italian Sea, but one Royal Navy there automatically supplies Malta. But it is a minot thing.

-Excellent tool of learning. I have friends that want to play wargames, but the "ASL way of life" is too time and mind consuming. I love ASL, but we need variety. When I was a child there were a Game Company named "NAC" who published simple but good wargames. One person who played "simple" wargames when he was 12 or 14 years old, can play EE without much effort.

I gave this game a 9.5. Thanks for this masterpiece.

Thanks Jose.

I'm always interested in the opinions of those who have played the big grand strategic games such as WiF.

3 plays in something like For Sale or Heimlich and Co isn't enough to review, but for a monster wargame like EE it's adequate. Nice review :)

You say that EE is a simple game. I've taken a look at the rules and looked at a few friends play a turn in a game and I must admit that the game looks quite complicated. Perhaps if someone taught me how to play, it wouldn't be that bad but those rules don't strike me as being simple.

I think simple is relative in this case. The rules are certainly reasonable compared to some of the other game in the same space. I remember the rules for AH 3rd Reich with no fondness. These rules are well written and not too long. If this is the first time someone is playing this type of game then getting through the rules may require several readings.

One of the reasons I picked this game was that now that I have finished the rules, I am hoping that most of my playing time will be spent strategizing and not continually referencing the rule book.

I agree 100 per 100. Once you have read the rulebook two or three times, you can play concentrated in the map and the blocks, only stopping to flip the rulebook in special situations ( mmm... what about Around the Cape Supply... or about Italian Morale Colapse ). The basic mechanics is so "intuitive", that there is few room for errors. Yes, there are mishaps, forgotten details... I suffered a major drawback after suffering an airborne landing in Mountains... we forgot that little detail. But it was our fault, not Designer´s. Rules are concise, complete and full of examples.

Perhaps not really a "Simple" Game, but this is about ETO Strategic warfare. Production, subs, strat bombing, armoured penetrations, beachhead, supply, political considerations... Perhaps EE is not a "easy" game, but yes one of the "easier" ways to play entire WW2 in Europe, in a realistic way.
