Interview with Christian Petersen of Fantasy Flight Games
I dusted off my microphone and did a quick little interview with Christian Petersen, CEO of Fantasy Flight games, regarding the recent news of the republications of Cosmic Encounter, Borderlands and the game design used in Frank Herbert's Dune. Enjoy!

Fantastic! Thanks a bunch Aldie.

Obviously the BEST news is about Cosmic Encounter as (from the interview):

1. It's coming out 1st (hopefully by next GenCon).
2. It's going to be a blend of Eon and Mayfair stuff.
3. It's going to provide us with an "absolute staggering amount of Aliens to really make sure that no two games are alike."
4. It will be more of a "Gamer's version, not a "mass market" version.

This is going to be awesome!

Yes, he's been known to pretty much invent board game podcasting...

Great to hear you back at the mic, Aldie.

Thanks! Nice and timely.

IMHO, the Geek needs more of this type of input from you Aldie. This should be a sticky in the news section.

Round up those guys from Valley Games and ask them where my copy of Hannibal is.

Considering FFG's modus operandi with similar games it would be strange if it didn't support six. The real question is if it'll support eight!

Re: Interview with Christian Petersen of Fantasy Flight Game
I really like how FFG this year is putting a lot of effort into coordinating announcements and releases with a big con (it doesn't have to be GenCon as any big con would do) It gives people new/casual to the hobby more reason to go to a big con and hopefully that experience will hook them on gaming and help our hobby grow.

I couldn't be more excited about the CE and Borderlands announcement AND the fact that they'll be working with the original designers. If I could pre-order them now, I would!

I would have asked why they're not giving away a copy of Starcraft here at the geek as a promotion.

Sorry, I just don't see the point of "publishing" the Dune game design without the Dune theme. That's like having Reiner Knizia rewrite the Dune novels with a pasted on Twilight Imperium theme and expect people to read them.

Please, let the game rest in peace if you can't do it properly.

Actually, it's nothing like that. FFG, a game publishing company, putting out a game is NOTHING like Knizia, a game designer, authoring a novel.

I'm as disappointed as anybody (Look at my avatar, geekbadge, and "name"!!), but geez, let's see what they do with it before we crap all over it. They might make a good game! FFG has been known to do that!

You might as well say theme is the only important part of a game. That's just silly. A good game is a good game no matter the theme.

And no it's not like Knizia rewriting Dune. It's like taking Puerto Rico and setting it in Haiti instead. Rename all the roles and buildings. Change the crops to molasses, cocoa, rice and tea. You'd have basically the same game, the same mechanics, just a different theme. You'd still have a classic game.

If the game itself had been poor, Dune or no Dune, the game would not be considered a classic.
If you want proof, take a look at the ratings for Parker Brothers version of Dune.

Parker Brothers Dune is a perfectly fine game in it's own right, but suffers from unfairly low ratings by comparison with the AH DUNE.

If people juged it on it's own merits, I think it would be rated a lot higher.

I agree that the Knizia-writing-Dune analogy is bad, but so is the Puerto Rico one (for one, since PR isn't based on a novel). A better analogy would be a Knizia LOTR remake set in the Runebound world. Yeah, you could still have Dumbo and his hobb..., er, halfling friends on a quest to destroy the evil artifact in a volcano, but without the LOTR theme it wouldn't be the same.

Some games are just more thematic than others - and rely more on their themes than others.

Retheming Dune is a shame no matter what, but just doing an alternative SF version set in a plagiarized setting seems the worst solution. If anything, I'd be more in favour of a solution like the one Michael Barnes suggested elsewhere, making it into a game about competing families drilling for oil in Texas. Better than playing an SF game about Pete-the-Messiah of House Asterisk duking it out against the Bona Gerry order. arrrh

Re: Interview with Christian Petersen of Fantasy Flight Game
something about the dates

C.E : GenCon 2008
Dune (can't call it Dune I think) : Fall 2008
Borderlands : 2009

Great news.

Thanks Aldie for this Interview.

I am really disaponted that FFG is doing a remake of Dune without the license. (I know they have the game mechanics license) After checking out Tannhauser tonight and TOI, I think FFG would do an awesome job with the artwork and components of a reprint.

I heard that the Sci-Fi Channel might have the rights tied up because the game license was part of the package for the mini-series. I guess this is what is holding up an RPG being made.

(Last two questions)
http://www.dunenovels.com/FAQ.html

Now the "Flightmaster" says that the new Duneish game will be reworked to accomodate the TI3 universe. So who knows maybe the end result will be a game to rival Puerto Rico. Stranger things have happened. Maybe this game will become a "Glass Bead Game" and be played for the next 10,000 years. Who knows?

Well, why not just invent the "Glass Bead Game" and call it that? If you stick around for 10k years, then you will be the one to find out. goo
