naval invasion
Hi,
I am playing my third game of HD, the first two were a disaster as I lost as the North in the first 3 months, not defending Washington properly.
Anyway the third game is going better. Each time we have added some additional rules that we thought looked good.
The naval invasion one I liked, as I felt it was too easy when I threw a 6, just to go and steal New Orleans for free. So we play where the attackers have to beat the port garrison first.
My question being, is if I send two from Washington to the port, as 2 of my marches and then for another one march I have a cavalry that can reach NO as well that turn, what happens? Does the Cav help with the port invasion? If the Cav went first it would enter an empty city and take it, so woudl the naval invasion still be having to fight the garrison?

Secondly, we play the only way to get crack infantry is to win a battle, so if the south is down to only having limited pieces on the board and they all ready are 3 or 3(-1) does this mean there is no free promotion? So in this instance would you just put another 3 into the pool? Because if you cannot promote then there would be the loss of adding to the pool.

With only three games done you haven't really even explored the possibilities available under the printed rules so I'm not sure it makes sense to fiddle with the rules yet.
As far as grabbing New Orleans for free, if the CSA wants to keep a port badly enough they will garrison it. Historically it was the withdrawal of CSA coastal garrisons to fight the battle of Shiloh that provided the Union forces with the opening they needed to move against several Gulf Coast sites, so I don't see a need to force the federals to fight some notional garrison.

No so much as fiddling with the rules, but adding the ones from the advanced living rules that made sense.
I have read a few reviews here that explain how some of the extra and advance rules add to the game so thought we would implement them early.
