Shipyards strongest with 3 players
Having played the two player game multiple times, I was pretty meh on Shipyards. In a two player game the cost of 7 to get a -5 discount on only 3 total cards later on is pretty weak.

But as a warning to those going from two player to games with more players: Shipyards becomes its most powerful with 3 players if you can pick it up cheap --because there's more multiples of the cards that it discounts, and you'll have a monopoly on the discount.

3 players: 1 Shipyard card, 5 cards that can be discounted.
4 players: 2 Shipyard card, 6 cards that can be discounted.
5 players: 2 Shipyard card, 8 cards that can be discounted.

That's true of all of the discount cards. Dyer is much more powerful when you can get two or buy two Dye Houses. Similarly getting two Public Works should put you in a game winning position.

Although I've never thought of the Shipyard as being that weak, even in two player.

Here, I would say if you really are able to buy two Dye Houses, your opponents are asleep at the table. :snore:

But you're absolutely right, City Center and its -4 discount on the 5 VP Public Works follows a similar pattern --strongest in 3 player, strong in 5, less strong in 4, weakest in 2.

The power extends beyond buying two, as long as you can make someone else pay a premium for the Dye House it's valuable.

For a while, we considered shipyards to be very strong. Right now I'll almost never be upset with getting one at cost, although it may not be my first choice.

Even if you never win a ship with it, 3.5 dollars per VP isn't bad, and you'll drive the price of ships up by a card or so for someone else. If you win a ship with it, you've spent $2 (and any income that could have earned you between the time you bought shipyards and the first purchase) for 2VP.
