Bang! The Bullet! » Forums » Reviews
The new edition, worth the price of admission?
I love Bang! and all the expansions. We play it over lunch nearly every day at work, and have for the last 2 1/2 years or so. The cards from our original deck have held up quite well, but have acquired an added brown tinge around the edges from such frequent use. We have all the expansions, including High Noon in German, as we couldn't find an English copy.

And so, when the new release was announced, we were excited, and I picked up a copy in addition to some Christmas shopping I was doing. My review will focus on the differences between the editions, and whether or not I think the new version is worth it or not.

1) THE PRICE
starstarstarstarnostar
For me, at my FLGS, the Bullet retails for $35, while Bang! retails for $10, Dodge City for $10, (German) High Noon for $10, and Fistful of Cards for $5, so the total package price for both is $35, although the bullet gives you 5 cards not available in the other set, and a sheriff's badge. I think they could have gone with a box that is double the size of the original box, and brought the price down some, but if I was starting fresh, the Bullet is fair price for the set.

2) THE PACKAGING
halfstarnostarnostarnostarnostar
The new package is a bullet shaped container that stands just over a foot tall, and is four inches wide. It looks very cool, but is quite impractical. Considering that Bang! + Dodge City + High Noon + Fistful of Cards all fit inside the two boxes for a total size of 4" x 5" x 2", this new package is going to take up way more space in the games cupboard. The slots inside the bullet don't seem to hold the cards very nicely, and we couldn't remove the sheriff's badge from it's indent. We will be moving the cards to the old boxes. It gets one star for looking very cool, and a half star for putting a flat edge on the bullet, so it'll stand up or lay flat without rolling, but the impracticality of it all costs it more than those gain it.

3) THE NEW CARDS (OR LACK THEREOF)
starstarstarnostarnostar
The Bullet adds 3 new characters, and two new cards for the High Noon/Fistful round modifiers. The two added round modifiers are both welcome additions. The three new characters are Claus the Saint, Johnny Kisch, and Uncle Will. The latter two seem to be average 4 bullet powers; nothing game breaking. Claus the Saint's power seems quite powerful, as he gets to draw N+1 cards (where N is number of players), choose 2 for himself, and give everybody else whatever he wants from the remainder. Besides the obvious advantage of keeping the best two cards for himself, it gives him the chance to really help allies, at the expense of having to give cards to his enemies. Time will tell if he's overpowered or not.

These are the only new cards available, and won't drastically change the game. I'm a bit disappointed that we didn't get to see new cards added to the main deck.

4) THE CHANGES
starstarstarstarnostar
I'm torn on this point. The biggest change is that they removed the book symbol from the cards, and added explanatory text directly on the cards for things like Jail!, Dynamite, Indians! etc. This is a big improvement for helping new players, and as the old symbol told you nothing, this is a straight up improvement. They also changed the +1/-1 symbols to a written explanation, which I don't mind, but there is still room underneath for the old symbols, which were easier to spot at a distance. My other small beef is that they removed all the Italian labels for the cards, and made the English subtitles the only text on them. We liked the flavour it added, and we'll probably still call a Stagecoach a Diligenza, but it seems to have lost a bit of that spaghetti western feel.

5) OTHER THINGS
starstarstarstarstar
Two minor points that deserve mentioning.

The first is that they included both the 7 role cards from Bang! and the 8 role cards from Dodge City. This means that you can still play any home cooked scenarios with 9+ players. I was worried that they might have only included the 8 from Dodge City which were given as a replacement so that the one new renegade wouldn't stand out.

The second is that the Bang/Dodge City cards have the same exact colour in the printing, whereas the when I bought them separately, the Dodge City cards were slightly brighter, so players could make better than random selections during "Panic"s and "Cat Balou"s.

6) OVERALL
starstarstarstarnostar
If somebody was interested in buying the whole set, I'd recommend the Bullet. The new explanatory text is a great improvement to teaching new players the game. The only beef I have with it is the packaging. I'd take the cards out, and stick them in a smaller box. If you have Bang! already, and your cards are in decent shape, there isn't anything new in this edition that would compel me to buy it, but if your cards are grungy from years of use, the price is right to replace your set.

The only point undeserved in your review. The cool aspect of the box is what really stands it apart in the collection from any other card games you may have. IMO, for that alone it takes star star star star nostar but as usual YMMV!!

It does look very cool. I should probably rate it a bit higher on packaging just for the reactions from the people at work.

Unfortunately, it takes up too much space in my games cupboard, which needs all the space it can get. It also seems to squish the cards a bit, and I can't retrieve the badge from it (I haven't grabbed something to pry it loose, because it doesn't really add anything to the gameplay).

That's because it belongs in your gun cabinet.

Nice review.

Very dependent on your game storage situation. If you have a lot of room and/or you publicly display your games as part of your home decor, the bullet is probably pretty cool. If your games are crammed into 2 shelves above the sheets and towels, it's probably going to be annoying, but as the reviewer says, you can always repackage.

I bought this without thinking too much about it and I'm not sure it was a wise decision. While the bullet is cool and aids in getting interest in the game from others, it is rather large and impractical. Plus I like to sleeve my cards and these won't fit, so now I'll have to play without sleeves.

Also I already had all the cards and the few extra cards aren't worth all that money. I am happy for the new and improved combined full color rules.

I'm justifying this to myself by thinking that this is actually a favorite multiplayer card game and that having a second set of cards is not a bad idea.

But I concur in that if you don't alreay own Bang! this is an excellent way to acquire it.

I cast my eyes on this thing for the first time today at my FLGS. It's a bit much, really, I mean look at it...

I don't think there's going to be too much debate on this one. Either you look at it and think 'Yeah, that'll look cool on my shelf,' or 'Ummmm.... fun game, but I'm not so sure about the giant plastic bullet.'

Not much middle ground here... zombie

I agreee totally about the way the new container stores the cards. They just don't fit in to well...but the dumbest aspect of it was that you can't actually separate the cards out by type. There are only 3 slots to divide up all the decks and store the cards....there is PLENTY of room to have added another 3 slots that were smaller so that you could pull out the role cards, character cards, high noon cards, etc. and make it really easy to get started. Instead you have to mix the decks and them separate them all out before playing. Beyond that however, I really like the metal case itself. It stands out from the other boxes in my collection, but then again I have the space right now on my game shelf to appreciate it.

This reason alone is why I'm going to be buying it:

(Well, that and it adds the impossible-to-find-in-English High Noon cards.)

I have the Bullet! It's cool, EXCEPT, CURSE THE PEOPLE WHO DECIDED TO PULL THE ITALIAN NAMES OFF OF THE CARDS!!!!

IDIOTS!!!!!

The Italian names are essential (to me) because of that spaghetti western/itsjustfuntosay feel!!!

My friends and I have a rule to announce each card as it is played with a bit of flare, "DIlliigeeennzza!!!!", "EEEMPooriiIIIIiiiooo", "a-MAaanCaaatOh"

whew, anyway I have taught my family the Italian names so it's ok, but I pity new players who will miss out on the Italian.

Also, the metal bullet packaging is great looking and does not bother me with its odd shape, BUT the plastic molding inside is 'retarded', and the cards hardly fit back in, and there are not enough card holding slots to separate the cards into easy-to-start sections, as mentioned above. And, the plastic Sceriffo's badge is pretty cheap and weak looking, but it gave me the idea of buying a real shiny new metal star and using a dremmel tool or a nice pen to write "Sceriffo" on it.

In the end it's not as good as I had hoped, but the game(s) are so fun that I am not disappointed.

Same here. I have a Dutch version of High Noon, and having everything in English will be great. Plus less reliance on having the rule book around too. The new cards for High Noon were available to download off Da Vinci's website, but I'm sure real cards are going to look better than my printed up versions :)

Glad to see they "balanced" Claus though. His original incarnation was ridiculously overpowered (draw 10 cards, hand out one to each player, keep the rest) when they put him out as a holiday e-newsletter special.

:) Are you kidding me? This is one of the coolest packaged games ever. I would much rather find a small box to store it in (if necessary), than buy it in a small box and try to find a giant plastic bullet to show off my new game.

If you are running out of space, buy a bigger house.

Did I mention that I'm in Real Estate.... lol

This is weird. I'm quite sure all the cards had Italian names in my Bang! Bullet which I bought here in Finland. I have to check when I get off from work.

The giant bullet is a dealbreaker for me. I'd be embarrassed to bust that thing out in front of my friends, and I cringe to think of how much this pointless gimmick adds to the manufacture and shipping cost of the game.

I also dislike the packaging. I have limited room for games and my shelves all have been re-fit to stardard box sizes. I hate it when one game takes more space than it should.

It won't keep me from buying it though. Anyone come home to find this game missing from the game closet and your SO no where to be found either?
