Question of the Podcast
How do you deal with players that suffer AP?
Do you mind games with lots of down time, or does that not bother you?
What do you think game designers should take into account to minimize down time in their games?

Curses. I knew I was dragging my feet too much.

I've got a review that I've got to finish editing. It will be to you for the next episode, if you want/need it.

Now to download that new episode.

I guess you could say I had a little Analysis-Paralysis when deciding which game to review.

I was glad to hear your review of Cluzzle, I just got this game and haven't played it yet. It sounds like it will be perfect for my family, though.

As for the discussion du jour: My father is an AP-prone person, and that has taught me to bring games that accomodate for that when we play with them. The other thing I'm learning to do is to teach him games in a way that only shows a limited decision tree. By showing him how to think and plan ahead on his turn it limits his AP issues. Games he hates (and I'm sure a lot of other AP people might dislike as well) are games that involve speed as a gaming skill. Wicked Witches Way is the most recent game I received that he despised. Well, I guess it's all about playing to the crowd.

I have to say, there's nothing worse than 3 people playing their turns quickly and one who takes 15 mins over every turn. it's even worse when it's someone you like, cos you don't want to hurt their feelings.

I'd prefer to play people who have AP via pbem on Vassal. That's a win-win.

I always try and make my decisions while others are taking their turns. Only rarely will it chnge too much by the time your turn arrives, cos you usually have time to consider various options. Some people seem to be surprised when their turn arrives, as if their name had been pulled out of a hat at random :)

Phil.

My worst experience was with an AP person who took a 30 minute for a turn in Quiddler. Yeah that was the last game I played with him.

Personally, I think the gaming community at large has ADD. :) I am constantly amazed at the whining about down time. Take for example, Runebound. I hear whining about waiting for your turn. Do you not have any interest in what the other players are doing? You're supposed to be feeling some sense of story here. You don't care what's happening in the chapters you're not featured in? Off of the top of my head, I can only come up with one legitimate example of a game with hideous downtime... Titan. If the other players are only moving and mustering then it's no big deal, but as soon as one guy initiates a few attacks that you're not in... snooze time!

If I'm with players who are reading the cards and telling the story, that would be one thing.

But most of the time, the people I play with skip the flavor text and just read off the statistics and start rolling.

Whoo, that's a tale..

I understand what you mean, but some games are worth the wait, some aren't. Most adventure games really are not engaging and not worth the way. (I feel the same way about many RPGs that don't have a strong central story, or rely on random encounter tables.)
