Disappointing, Dull, Dilemma, Doubt. The 4-D Review.
Disappointing: There is something so tempting to me about movie-themed games. I always feel drawn to buy them, despite the fact that there aren’t a whole lot of movie buffs in my family. So, disregarding all sense to the contrary, Cineplexity found it’s way onto my Christmas wishlist. When I received it, I was happy to see that the rules were extremely simple and we could start playing almost immediately. Unfortunately it went over worse than what I expected.

Dull: The basics of the game sound so simple (coming up with a movie that fits the 2 category cards that are selected.) However, the combinations that kept coming up were so obscure. Even I, the movie buff in the family, could barely think of a movie that fit the categories. So we would just sit there in silence thinking. Someone would suggest a movie that, very loosely, fit the categories and the judge would simply award the point just to move on.

Dilemma: The next problem we ran into is the judge didn’t know the movies that players suggested. So then there is a discussion period as the player tries to defend their movie selection. And if the judge chooses to veto their guess, the player gets frustrated for the rest of the game. This isn’t the light, fun experience that I was hoping for when I looked at this game.

Doubt: So I, once again, find myself in the position of regret. My family will doubt all my wishlist items because of this one experience, and will be more judgemental of my choices simply because I subjected them to this game. If only I had a gaming group that shared my knowledge and love of movies. Now I have heard some suggested variants to this game, but I’m not reviewing variants here. As the game stands, it was an excruciating experience for my family and I don’t expect it to hit the table again any time soon.

Jeebus, try one of the frickin' variants. They're not particularly hard.

I'm sure I will at some point, but I've got to find another group of people to play with. I play most of my games with my family, and if my parents see this game again I wouldn't be surprised to see them throwing me out of their house. :)

Not to mention the fact that, if the game is so flawed that you have to play a variant in order to enjoy it, it's not that good of a game in the first place.

I've only seen the sample pack from Knucklebones, but I got the same impression and wasn't interested in trying the full thing

I played the game once and we all had quite a good time. But yeah, without movie buffs, the game really doesn't make much sense. The design is clever and the cards build in a lot of variety, encouraging you to think outside the box. But people do need to have some knowledge of film to enjoy it.

One man's meat is another's poison. My fiancee, however, likes it so much that it is the only game that she'll play with me. I tried every single type of game in my collection but she hates them all. She's not a gamer. And have never heard of Mario. But when it comes to cineplexity, she would gladly play it with me anytime, anywhere.

This game is also a big hit in my family. The cards are big and the prints are big, which is a huge plus as my parents finds Carcassonne and Puerto Rico tiles hard to read.

Cineplexity is a really good party game to play with non-gamers (but must be with the right crowd - my fiancee is a huge movie buff). Also, make sure you have internet access nearby handy to handle any disputes.
