Painting FFG Miniatures
I recently received Runebound in trade and the original owner had 9 of the 12 miniatures painted (what a nice surprise, by the way, Ced! Thanks!). Of course, I'd like to paint the final three. I've got some painting experience and I'm not terrible at it--but I'm by no means great.

I started painting them last night and had a few issues. The flesh tones went on fairly well, but when I tried to paint the yellow and orange, it sucked. They didn't cling to the figure at all (I'm using Vallejo paints, so they SHOULD be fine). Does anyone have any different paint suggestions or recommendations to help this process work.

Also, I really don't have the time I'd like to commit to painting my WoW Board Game figures, but in lieu of seeing the Runebound figures, I'd like them painted as well. Is anyone aware of any painting services that are willing to paint the FFG miniatures? I've contacted a few, but all have said they won't paint the FFG minis. I'd be willing to contract them out and pay fair market price for an individual BGGer that'd be interested as well.

If you have any helpful information, please let me know.

Thanks, as always!

I clean the minis with soap and water first. The next step would be to prime them. I prime mine black, others use white, then paint. Third, is I really shake the paint up before painting. It sounds like you got good paint, but maybe there was some dirt or something on them. I can't comment on your second question, but I have seen people post websites that paint minis but I don't have any links. Hope this helps.

No matter how you prime your minis, you should always paint white on any areas that will end up yellow or other very light colours.
Also, any metal areas should be given a black undercoat!

The man speaks the truth! You can't paint plastic miniatures without a layer of primer and before that, you must clean them (and dry them) properly.

I've painted all of the Runebound/Descent heroes as well as all of the monsters in Descent and the expansions. I never bothered to clean them, but I primed them all with some games workshop Black or White (depending on the primary colors of the figure to be painted). I've never had a problem with paints sticking, and I just use cheapy Apple Barrel paint from Wal-Mart.

Get thee to Michael's and find some stuff called Gesso. It is an acrylic paint with chalk that adheres particularly well to things, and shrinks as it dries.

On boardgamenews.com, I did a brief tutorial with my speed painting techniques. I did the entire Descent set with expansions at a pace of about 30 minutes per figure. The other nice bit is that the Magic Dip technique is fairly forgiving.

Two questions:

I was being cheap and I used Krylon Primer. Could this potentially lead to the lack of "sticking" of my brighter colors?

Is the Opacity, from what you all have seen, any better on the Apple Barrel cheapy paints? I'd love to use these for plastic minis, as I'm really looking for just a basic, tabletop quality.

I use Apple Barrel paints for all of my painting needs (Games workshop included) and all my game budies thinks I used GW paints. As long as you wash your figs and primer them well, your gonna finde a nice color. The "citrus" colors (yellows and oranges) can take a few coats to get a nice even color, but they will turn out nice with some patience. I painted all of my Runebounds and Doom figs with the "magic dip" method and they all look really great and blend in well wtih the rest of the game bits.
