Days of Wonder has just announced that they are raising the MSRP on many of their titles. Here is the link:

What does everyone think about this?

I don't care. I've already bought their one good game. They are not likely to make another game I'm interested in.

Never happy about paying more, but that is what DOW has to do on their end to keep producing things; so it's all fair. It seems like the $50 MSRP is becoming standard everywhere so it is not totally outrageous. Paying $80 for BL is taking it a bit far. For that I am thankful I already got my 2 copies and that most everything else I would want on the price bump I already own.

With the weakening dollar it's understandable.

Wondering why BattleLore went up and not Memoir 44 however, things like that can make it seem a little suspicious that they only raised the prices on things that are currently selling well maybe...vs. older games which may have many fans, but not selling as highly now???

But overall, it's amazing that games have held their prices so well under the rapidly declining value of the US Dollar.

Right, because Pirate's Cove and Gang of Four are flying off the shelves! ;)

Since I don't see "Cleopatra and the Society of Architects" mentioned in the article (a game I'm looking to buy w/income tax returns soon), I guess I'm OK with it! :D

(Although I may be upset about it in the future if I ever decide to buy TTR or Shadows Over Camelot...:( )

I think I'm glad I already own all those games (well, except Gang of Four). Although really, they only went up $10, which means a $7 increase online, and $7 is hardly a make-or-break amount of money.

Incidentally, it looks like Thoughthammer's already raised their prices, but Timewellspent hasn't. Probably a good time for people to quickly go out and buy games they were intending on buying soon.

Couldn't have anything to do with the need to produce more copies of those games that are flying off the shelves. Meanwhile the games that aren't selling are sitting in their warehouse already produced.

I'm set for now.

Re: Days of Wonder raising MSRP
I am outraged, and I will respond to this travesty by... well.. by having slightly less money.

Still, it seems like a strange way to implement the price change. Saying "all our new games are going to cost $10 more" seems a lot more agreeable than saying "the copy of the game sitting on the shelf in your local store that was $40 yesterday now costs $50."

I'll accept that they need to raise prices to handle increased production costs, but they don't need to produce the copy of Battlelore sitting in my FLGS.

I find it surprising they waited this long with raising the prices in the US. With the declining dollar value they must have made a lot less money on their sales in the US. As far as I can tell the prices in Europe did not change so that's good news for us Europeans.

Well, to be fair to DoW, they didn't raise the prices for games already in retailer inventory. They can't. Someone mentioned TH raised prices already, which either means they're taking advantage of the increase to get extra bucks on older, cheaper copies... or they are zeroed out on inventory and expect their next shipment to be at the higher price.

I read the whole "we have informed our distributors and retailers" part of the press release as saying "prices are already higher." I can't imagine why a store owner who charges MSRP would keep the current copies at the old price.

I guess it won't cause much of an uproar either way, but it seems like it might be a better idea to wait until the game is reprinted to start charging extra. That way they could generate a bunch of sales from people who wanted to get the game for a few bucks less, which in turn would generate more orders from stores.

Probably Drew, but they're still paying the Chinese with our weaker dollar and shipping cartons of games across the ocean with today's increased fuel costs.

Edit: at least a couple of the DOW games on my shelf were made in Germany - where again - our dollar and the cost of fuel hit us in the bottom line.

Mark my words, things from China will only cost more-and-more. Until manufacturers move onto another, less expensive producer - maybe it'll be Vietnam, maybe it'll be here in the good old US of A. We'll just have to wait and see.

My two cents, more expensive games mean I'll be buying less games. Not a problem, there seem to be fewer and fewer good games being produced :)

Actually, that is my local store's policy. They don't raise or lower prices on old stock. They base their prices on what they had to pay when they bought the game.
