Now any help on the Saudi Arabian mule?

Spoiler (click to reveal)
Solve this as if it was a one-word cryptopix. You need a synonym for "sod". And it's not a mule.

Black to move. Mate in 3.

Seriously - you need to write down the necessary moves to solve the problem and go from there.

Spoiler (click to reveal)
If done properly, you will notice something interesting about ranks (rows) involved in the 5 moves you have made

I get the mate in three or five moves total

Spoiler (click to reveal)
the ranks are 8-1,1-2
5-4 2-3
5-6

No matter what I use for numbers I get either 5 or 10 letters of garbage

Semi-obvious (perhaps) hint:
Spoiler (click to reveal)
Use algebraic notation, not symbolic

Bit more blatant hint
Spoiler (click to reveal)
The first move is Ra1 - the black Rook moves to square a1

Edit: PS - one of your moves looks incorrect.

Actually, you have what you need. Just reorder it as indicated by number, ignoring rank.

I'm assuming the key is the 'not "one of the guys"'.

Spoiler (click to reveal)
I'm thinking each word will have a male name/term in it, you'll take out the name/term, and you'll use the other part to fill in the 16 blanks.

That said, I can only get a couple words to fit with that theory...

Pretty reasonable assumption....

Spoiler (click to reveal)
as I could get all the words to fit that theory (and get the answer as a result.)

Spoiler (click to reveal)
Concentrate on names, not terms

I've been trying the same direction..

Spoiler (click to reveal)
Egyptian threads could be "tunic" (Nic) or "robe" (Rob), Not together could be "apart" (Art), and Exposture to harm could be "danger" (Dan), but even with a crossword solver and lots of entries, I cannot get a good word with those as starters. And the words I have for the others don't fit the pattern (no clue of any word for surrender).

The answer to the first clue isn't "robes". It's a type of fabric.

You need to follow the changes.

Does that follow starting with

the first place ribbon and going clockwise and back to center?
