OK, I have had zombies for a few years now and when I first got it, along with the expansions, we played it till we were walking dead. My two teenage sons and their friends would get into a zombie killing frenzy! We shelved the game for a while with the addition of other games. We broke it out last night and played a game. It did not have the same feel as it did in the past. It just didn't seem as fun anymore and now I know why.

WHAT ZOMBIES IS NOT
1. It is not a two to three player game...
I say this because when you have less that four players in the game, there are just way to many zombies on the board. Trying to get to one place to another is extremely difficult. There is on average 10 zombies placed a game round and, under 4 players there is on average 6 zombies death. With that rate, it doesn't take very long to have parts of the city you just can not get too. the Zombies are so numerous that it is impossible to get any where. Some cards, as great as they are, nearly impossible to get too. Not worth slicing 15 zombies to get one heal card or even the chainsaw.

2. It is not a very high strategic game
The game cards are 50% screw your neighbor and %50 items... however most of the items require you to go to a specific building in the city. Depending on the placement, you can see if it is strategic to go for it or not. The only real strategy is to determine if you are going to try to get to the helipad or kill 25 zombies. When I play to go to the helipad, I resist the urge to kill zombies to place the helipad. I also try to place my building and secretly create a nice spot to place it where there have been tons of zombie killing so the path to it will be easy. If I am going to kill 25, it is just kill kill kill and screw everyone else the best I can to keep ahead of the zombie count. That is not saying you can not get to the helipad and still kills tons of zombies, but I try to do one or the other.

3. Not a game for everyone
There are games out there that fall into this category. If you do not like zombies this game will not grab you. the lack of depth really turns it of to many. It is one that you either like or dislike. I have friends that will not even entertain the offer of playing this game.

WHAT ZOMBIES IS!!!
1. Great components.
You need to purchase 100 extra zombies to have enough... but when you do... the WOW factor goes up. There are plenty of them flesh eating monsters to go around. The art on the cards are great. Nicely done and really gives you that zombie feel. The city tiles are OK, a little thicker cards would prevent them from slipping on the table as bad, but they do look great. The only thing I have to complain about is that the bullets and heart tokens are both black in the original game. Expansions gave you red hearts which was a huge plus. they stink with the earlier copy of the game.

2. Highly competitive game
Wow! in the right size and group of players this game gets intense... The screw you cards are flying... zombies moving back and fourth... it is like ping pong. Players with the same item card working somewhat together to be the first to a building to grab the item... then throwing the player behind to the wolves just to get a big enough distraction to get the hell out of dodge. ALL the players do what they can to stop each other. There is not friends when you have munching zombies in your way! zombie

3. Great Game for teenage boys and good game group
If you are a father of two teenage sons like I am, it is tough to find something that you all can do together with them and their friends. Zombies merge that gap. Having a group of 4 to 5 playing this game where there is so much going on is great. Everyone is having a great time and playing the game the way it was meant to be... screw your neighbor to move ahead in the game. Look, I have a gun now!!!

This is the same if you have a good group of friends that just want to sit back, have a few tasty beverages and just hack and slash. There is no loser in this game... everyone wins if you let the game engulf you into the fun.

I give this game starstarstarhalfstarnostar
This is game that will only see the table under certain times and when you are in the right mood. The lack of depth makes this one of those once in a while games and that is the main reason it doesn't rate much higher...

HOWEVER, with the right setting and the right group... it hails a starstarstarstarstar rating!!

Happy zombie hunting!

Nicely balanced review. Use the Quick(er) Play Rules & you'll see a change in the scaling for varying players & it adds a different layer of strategy. I cannot recommend them enough for those you want something other than the game out of the box.

For the "blah" tokens? Take a Yellow & Red Marks-a-lot brand marker & give the Bullets & Hearts 1-2 "coats" with them. The black area absorbs the excess color & the white areas are now a nice shade of gold/red & really stand out.

*EDIT* Only use the above on the 1st ed hearts w/ the black borders, NOT the 2nd ed red border hearts.

Yep. That is what it is.

Love the game, but little depth.

However, if I'm in the mood, it's fun.

Also, expansions... aheh... look at what you want, put it in, and put the rest aside. Some is pretty junky.

I got a fix you have to try out!!!

When playing with a low number of players place less Zombies on the unnamed tiles.

We usually play with access points -1 zombies. So a T-junction has 2 zombies for example. Its perfect, you can get from point A to B without dying but you still clear out houses alone as you usually do.

Also you might want to check out "Six feet under" expansion. Sewers let you move past zombies in street areas which is helpful when someone plays zombie master and swarms your path with undead.
