Gang, it was time for my second Heroscape tournament. This tournament used the same format as the first, a timed five round Swiss with points based on surviving squads at battles end. If you recall, I finished in 10th place, dead last, in that tournament.

I hadn’t played at all since that last tournament, although that hadn’t stopped me from buying more common squads. Thus, in terms of dollars spent per minutes / games played, Heroscape is the most expensive game I’ve ever owned.

Primarily, the reason I finished last (1-4) before was poor army selection. My army then was 500 points of agents, all ranged but no heavy hitters and no synergies. This time I went to heroscapers.com and printed out a list of a half a dozen 500 point armies in advance. I mulled the six options over for a few days before narrowing it down to two choices.

As a historical gamer, I am almost OCD when it comes to OOBs. I like a consistent theme in my armies. It rubs me the wrong way to mix good and evil factions. The two armies I brought to Pet Shop Comics that day were as follows:

After unloading my car I went back out to move it and I saw Nate (short for Nathan,) my arch nemesis and his driver / bodyguard / father walking across the parking lot and a shiver went up my spine.


At the last minute I decided on the Gruts. Brandon made a head count and came up with nine players, one short of the number needed. Failing to get a volunteer and with the group's permission he drafted his daughter Lily. It seems Lily likes Elven archers so she borrowed my other army.



As fate would have it I drew my arch nemesis in the first round, again. Yes, Nate (short for Nathan) was my first opponent.



Those who read my previous report know that Nate soundly trounced me in the first round of the last tournament. Note Lily squaring off against Tyler in the background.

This time I had a new and better army with heavy hitters and bonding. Grimnak and Krug did most of the dirty work. Chompy was particularly effective (lucky) at dining on Nate's heroes and champions. Nate scored hits quickly and managed to get all but the final hit on each of my heavy hitters but couldn't put them down until it was too too late. As gracious as he had been in victory our last meeting, he was even more so in defeat.
