First Game -- I think we messed up
I think we got confused about the expedition leader.

We thought he was the figure for the temple guard and couldn't understand how one could establish 2 temple guards.

Can someone help us out here?

We played that claiming a temple meant having a majority of workers there and then placing our "leader" as the guard for 5 action points, at which time we lose all existing workers. We couldn't figure out how we could claim 2 temples since there was only one leader (or guard, by our reckoning).

After reading through the forums it sounds like the leader is just a super strong worker (worth 3 points) and "guarding a temple" just means paying the 5AP when you have a majority at a site, placing 1 worker on top of the temple and discarding the remaining works (but not the leader).

Also, it sounds like that temple may never score any points for any other player. Is that correct?

We had a great time playing and are eager to play again but I'd like to get the rules straight! As written, they were rather unclear!

Correct, or mostly correct. I would have to check the rules, but from memory if the leader is there the leader could be discarded or made the temple guard.

Once you have a temple guard (maximum of two per player) on a temple then only you will ever score points for that temple.

If the leader is present when you guard a temple, it is removed from the game along with the rest of the workers (except one which is used to mark the temple as guarded).

The above is all correct. Leader = 3 workers. Guard a pyramid when you have the majority there, remove all but one of your pieces (either a leader or a worker) which goes on top as a guard. Only the guarding player may ever score that pyramid again. Keep in mind that 1) each player may only guard two pyramids, and 2) no further excavation is allowed on a guarded pyramid -- the value is now fixed for the remainder of the game.
