So... Fantasy Flight Guys Luke and Charlie stopped by our FLGS on their way to Kublacon. A nice demo night of AT-43 and Mutant Chronicles was set up and I had to take the opportunity to rub shoulders with these guys. While AT-43 and MC looked cool (OH MY GOSH COOL for the AT-43 miniatures!), my true interest was AGOT:LCG. We asked about the base/starter pack that would be coming out. Luke responded by showing me this:

This is a box right at the same size as the AGOT board game. Very cool box with the neat little title "A Game of Thrones: Card Game". While this is just a empty teaser display, I was able to glean a few points from Luke and the box that owe repeating here.

1) The format: The box is meant to be a stand-alone platform with four, 52-card decks comprising of Stark, Lannister, Baratheon, and Targaryan. Yup. Greyjoy and Martell are on the bench for this one. Players can choose which deck to go with and then go head to head. Nice thing is that the boxes looks plenty big enough to hold a couple of the LCG packs in it along with the base game components.

2) It has a board: Yes, it is a quasi-board game where there will be a board that has reference icons and power pool areas and what not. The board also has a score track incorpoarated in it and has the title roles from the CCG starters (with nifty little figurines!) built in to the board. This looks to give a nice feel and will definitely help show new people the game.

3) There be gold!: An interesting addition is the actual usage of Golden Dragons. This is a change in the game. Golden Dragons will be rewarded based on gold generating locations and plot cards. They will stay with you through the round and will not be discarded until the end of the turn. This allows Golden Dragons to be used in a similar way as Influence is now. In fact, the new Littlefoot that is shown on the back cover is quite the gold fiend. He is +1 power for each Golden Dragon you have in your bank. He who has the gold, makes the rules it seems!

Outside of that, the game will be played very similarly to what we now know. The new format is definitely set to encourage the melee style of play but that is one of the great things about A Game of Thrones. I'm excited about this new product and look forward to the many other advantages of the LCG vs. CCG format.

Hope you don't mind this mini or pre-review. Its all I could get out of them but I'm excited about what I saw. The word is to expect this product out as pre-market status at Gencon and hopefully in the open market soon after. I'd close with a picture of the back cover, but the mods don't want me to show that for some reason. I guess there was a glare in the picture like the front cover!

Oh well! Thanks again and keep on gaming!

Newb question... LCG means Stand-Alone Card Game, correct?

I love the GoT boardgame, and would be willing to buy this as long as it's not just a gateway to the CCG. I gave up that particular brand of addiction when I stopped playing V:TES.

CCG's are a bad monkey to have on one's back.

There no longer is a CCG. It's become a LCG. What does that mean? No collectible booster packs. Instead you buy a Chapter Pack that has specific cards in it. You know exactly what you're getting up front. Sure, in the long run it's still a money drain, but nowhere NEAR the money drain that a CCG usually is.

The LCG format is much more agreeable cost- and space-wise compared to a typical CCG. Once this core set comes out, think of AGoT: The Card Game like BattleLore. There'll be a fully playable base game. Then periodically there will be expansions with fixed, known contents (the so-called Chapter Packs). Buy all, none, or just the ones that interest you. They go for $10 a pack and currently have a one-a-month release rate. That's peanuts compared to the cost of a typical CCG and yet still offers the constantly morphing landscape that make CCGs appealing.

I had been interested in AGoT:CCG for some time but never jumped because of the cost and card chasing frustration that comes with CCGs. I recently started playing when the LCG format was announced and couldn't be happier with my decision. It is a very enjoyable, engrossing game (both in deck building and actual game play) with a friendly, mature community of players.

LCG = Living Card Game

Each chapter pack has a total of 40 cards. 10 cards as singles, and 10 cards with 3 copies each.

Plans are for there to be 6 chapter packs in a block, with a base set starting off each block.

Love the universe and have wanted in on the ccg for awhile but when I bought FFG revamped the game so my cards were old news and I didn't feel like antying up again but I will definitley be hooked if its LCG and FFG sticks to it.:D

I have been looking for a 2-player AGoT game.

The boardgame is good but it is for 3+ players.

The cardgame is supposed to be good but it is a collectible game and I am tired of collectible games.

So, after a long wait, the AGoT: LCG seemed to be it.

I just realized it is also to be played with 3+ players.

Bummer.

Still waiting for the right AGoT game.

I wouldn't worry too much about the number of players; the box will contain four decks, but if I understood correctly, it will be well playable by two. In the essence gameplay didn't change from CCG, just the format.

I hope that is the case. If so, I will probably pick this up.

Definitely more interested in this, maybe I'll pick up the base pack.

I LOVE the books, but have always stayed away from CCGs due to the amount of cash I dumped into L5R.

That said, I think this is a pretty amazing way to do a card game and I'm all in!

the game allows up to three copies of the same card. does this mean that were going to have to buy three chapter packs each time?

I wouldn't say it's obligatory at all, but we'll see how the meta resolves and developes.
Base set decks should be well ballanced against each other, so it will probably work as an independent (but open-ende and expandable) system (on the casual level).

As for the chapter packs; their Call of Cthulhu LCG's version - the Asylum packs - contain 3 copies of each "common" (10 different) and one copy of each "rare" (also 10 different).

Playing on tournaments might of course require some signles investing ...
