An Average Joe review
Average Joe reviews are aimed at the average gamer. You know who you are!

Those of us who:
1) Know what ‘Eurogame’ and ‘Ameritrash’ means.
2) Know that enjoying the game is more important than winning.
3) Don’t own more than 50 games.
4) Don’t consider their FLGS a second home (maybe a 3rd or 4th though).
5) Like to read a review without being overloaded with information.

I am fairly new to the game of Alhambra, but after seeing it here and on store shelves - it had been sitting in the corner of my brain as a future purchase. Last month, I got my chance to play this simple... but quite masterful, game.

Wow! I wasn't expecting much after reading the directions, but boy did this game impress me! To tell you the truth, it impressed me even more when I played it a second time. I can't wait to play it again!

This is just a quick review for those of us on BGG that consider ourselves gamers but have less than 50 games in our collection. I won't waste time explaining the game - if you need instructions, that can be found on the Alhambra BGG game page.

Artwork:
Good enough - nothing too fancy... that includes the box art, cards and tiles. Doesn't detract from the game.

Components:
Very good - the tiles are solidly made to last a good long time. Cards are of standard stock, and I can see them getting worn over time. The boards are nice, especially the score board (wish Carcassonne would have something like this).

The Rules:
Very good - easy to understand, not too long, and plenty of examples. Once read, rarely had to refer to manual while playing the first time.

The Game:
Excellent - I was honestly amazed at all the things going on during the game! At first, it appeared like you just bought some buildings and put them in your city. If ONLY things were that simple! You have to figure out your money, what tiles you need, what colors you should be trying to collect, what colors are other players buying that you need to make sure you have more of, how to place them in your city without making things hard on yourself... and quite a few more things! This is not a put-down at all, it is a HIGH compliment for the game. I loved all the dynamics or what was going on - plenty of different strategies to follow, and you could switch strategies in mid-game depending on how things were going.

Downtime:
Next to None - the game moved along very swiftly. There are some brief Analysis Paralysis moments, but even those were not too bad.

Game Length:
Just Right - nobody was getting tired of the game when the finish was approaching. The 3 scoring rounds made it really interesting - especially since you didn't know exactly when the scoring rounds would pop up... I really liked this random mechanic.

Finish:
Very good - for some reason, both games we played we were very equal on scoring throughout the whole game. And the final score reflected that - we were within 7 points of each other. We really could not guess who was winning until the final round of scoring, so the surprise was great. Nobody had the feeling of being way behind, and just waiting for the game to get over.

Pros:
Easy instructions and playability
Good between longer games
Good gateway game

Cons:
Honestly, can't come up with any at the moment!

Overall:
I highly recommend this game - while it isn't a heavy gamer's game, it isn't a overly light game either. I wish I had picked this game up a long time ago, as everyone really loved it.

I give it a 9/10

Re: Lot Going on Here
This is one of my favorite lighter games. When you combine this main game with the dice version it takes way too long for my tastes. This base version plays very well from 2-4.

Re: Lot Going on Here
Most of my friends don't like it and I think it's very easy to hate Alhambra if you have a bad game. If you loose you are really upset due to the amount of luck which is involved.

When I save money to buy a building that is really important for my Alhambra, someone else will always take it before me. And if that happens all the time, you will hate the game. Playing it with many people is therefore less fun.

As a family game, it's really good though. It's very easy to understand, also very unique and nice game materials, design etc, although they could have put a little more energy on the buildings, which are all the same if they are in the same colour.

Re: Lot Going on Here
the key to alhambra is really that you can't play with more than 3 players, otherwise it's a luckfest and a tad too long for how much luck is involved.

Re: Lot Going on Here
I play this game in between the "bigger games". Its quick, fun and my 10 and 5 year old girls are able to get the math of it. I don't know about the luck factor, my game plan keeps me mostly competitive against my red blue and yellow Alhambrians. Wish I had the green coloured money though.

Re: Lot Going on Here
I've played it twice; once with 5 players and once with 6. I agree with earlier posts that is is a luck fest, I've been on the receiving end of bad luck both times and do not like the game because of this.

But that said, it is a game that I would like to like because it is easy and colourful and relatively quick. People have said it is better as a 2 or 3 player.

I used to own it. We traded it away. I really don't see what all of the fuss is about. We thought the game was a waste of time. :yuk:

An excellent game with three players. I very much enjoy it. It fades quickly with more or less.

Gotta disagree Sag. It plays just great with 2. I would agree that 4 starts to degrade the game.

Disagree with both of you - 4 seems a nice balance. More would not be good and I find the 2 player version a tad simple.
Basically 3 or 4 - no more, no less. Still a good filler game with either of these numbers. Also a great ice-breaker.

I sort of agree, but really, the only reason I don't like it with five or six is downtime, not "more luck".

Re: Lot Going on Here
I got this game for Xmas 07. I love it , to play and to look at , the graphics are simple but elegant and the colours clear and pretty:).
Ive played 1x 6 person game and lots of 2 people games.
The 6 player game was highly competitive with everyone wanting purple and green tiles boohoo but heaps more fun and a sillier aspect than a 2 player game .

I play this with my freind Guy often, Im not sure how he feels about the luck aspect but I'm so pleased that he beat me in a game of it this week. I found it has plenty of decisions to be made especially with the building the wall and getting those all important extra points every scoring round.
One house rule Guy and I have is to take ' Dirks' tiles out and leave them face down. Ive found for me anyway that I keep looking for that one piece that may finish the top left hand corner etc.,,,I think it makes the game and your Alhambra a lot tighter when you are not sure if you will get that particular tile to finish your city.
A game I'm happy to play anytime :)
