Risk Variant: Settlement Risk
It's simple. Each person draws one country card from the deck, and places three armies there. Then you start expanding. You may move and explore as far as you wish, but remember to leave at least one person behind in your former territory

Ok, so how do you gain Risk cards? by exploring? I take it no neutral armies are needed then since your army is the first to settle the next territory. I'll give it a try like this and see what happens. Thanks for the variant!

Interesting! for as many years as i have played Risk, this sounds like it has merit - with only 3 new armies every turn it would take a bit to claim a bigger country and so negating the luck of placement in prime areas...

I am assuming the answer to the above is that you don't get cards until you run into owned territories?

I LIKE THE IDEA OF A DISTINCT BEGINNING PHASE OF BUILD UP, AND COUNTRY GRABBING, UNTIL YOU REACH EACH OTHER (oops damn caps key) - also allows players to play a style, go straight toward the other player and thwart their gains, or just make your own claims...

i also like the idea that only starting with 3 armies means it would be a long time before you you have an ammased army, unless you sacrifice land grabbing to go after the other guys territories and start getting cards earlier than the other guy

then their is the initial placement by randomness which can make a different game depending on distance from each other etc. some times you would start int he same country!

like like like! I think this would really be great on the LOTR Risk board :)

thanks for the idea Mark! I would sure like to hear some more ideas form others!

Sounds very interesting. I'd like to see reinforcement rules set at +1 battalion for every 3 territories owned. Gives players the choice to spread out to gain more reinforcements or go right into fighting.
Could also eliminate the "must leave one unit behind" rule for fortifying or moving. That would allow players to float around the board with ease and change tactics quite a bit. Could be interesting!
