Zooloretto - 10 Word Review and Rules Complexity Score
Following are the ten topics most characteristically mentioned about Zooloretto in over 800 user ratings comments on BGG. Hopefully after 60 seconds you'll know if you want to chase more detail.

"ZOOLORETTO" IN TEN WORDS:
(Starting with most mentions above average...)
1. Coloretto (a game)
2. Family
3. Animals
4. Spiel de Jahre
5. Zoo
6. Cute
7. Theme
8. Trucks
9. Money
10.Gateway

RUNNER-UP TOPIC WORDS:
"Enclosure", "Baby", "Barn", "Worthy", "Pens", "Panda", "Stall", "Expansion", "Decisions", "Light"

CONTEXT:

1. COLORETTO
"a mix between Coloretto and California"
"moderately souped-up"
"loses some of the clearness and elegant simplicity of Coloretto"
"no longer as nasty"
"more theme"

2. FAMILY
"good light and fast"
"more substance than most fun light family games"
"concrete goal of collecting animals has made Zooloretto easier for my 5 and 3 year old kids to learn than Coloretto"
"I'd rate it 10 for kids and families and 8 for all other gamers."

3. ANIMALS
"animals and vendor stalls fit into a player's zoo"
"limited number of pens for different animals"
"watch what your opponents animals are"
"players trying to mess up other players plans by putting different combinations of animals on the trucks"
"I wish the animals stood out a bit more"

4. Spiel de Jahre
"understandable why it won"
"surprised that this game won"
"strange choice for SdJ 2007 award - 'family game' criteria is met, indeed, but what about the rest?"

5. ZOO
"take trucks full of animals and squeeze them into your zoo"
"deciding how and when to rearrange your zoo"

6. CUTE
"cute"
"animals"
"baby animals"

7. THEME
"family-friendly theme & graphics"
"barely there"
"zoo theme and artwork really adds to the experience"
"works well"
"pasted on"

8. TRUCKS
"trying to mess up other players plans by putting different combinations of animals on the trucks"
"the 'trucks' look nothing like trucks"
"probably more to the placement of tiles on the trucks than is evident the first time around"
"push your luck element"

9. MONEY
"very tight"
"actually hindered the game when compared to the streamlined elegance of Coloretto"
"nicely enhanced with the limited enclosures and ways to spend money"
"adds a whole new dimension of tactical options"
"adds a little more control"
"seems somehow pasted on, and somehow doesn`t fit the game"

10. GATEWAY
"decent player interaction without being too vicious"
"still quite entertaining for more hardcore gamers"
"good as a gateway alternative to Ticket or Settlers"

RULES COMPLEXITY SCORE:
20 to start a first game .. 32 to be ready to fully plan ahead
(Note: roughly speaking this is a concept count, not strategic complexity)

As a subjective comment: when I counted these rules I was surprised how many individual fiddly little things there are. The thematic binding is good enough to mask the rule count. Also, most of the extra rules between "20" and "32" are borderline for not bothering to count at all, since they're either rare situations or almost a natural assumption.

Compare:
Ra: 10 .. 14
Chess: 9 .. 12
Settlers of Catan: 12 .. 19
Puerto Rico: 20 .. 31
Ticket to Ride: 11 .. 11
Bohnanza: 9 .. 10
Carcassonne (H&G): 8 .. 11

The Rules Complexity numbers are simply a count of the number of distinct rule concepts you need to learn to participate in the game... the minimum set to get started and the full set to understand where you might be headed. This article includes a detailed discussion.

I hope you enjoy more "10 Word" reviews

Agreed. Playing this game in conjunction with Aquaretto fixes this. Aquaretto puts more money into the system than you strictly need to play it, because Aquaretto has a mechanic by which you can gain points for having extra money at the end of the game. And in a combined Zoo/Aqua game, you can spend money earned by your Aqua zoo in your regular Zoo. So suddenly you can afford to do more things than before. It increases the "little more control" to "a lot more control," and makes it feel less pasted on. Of course, spending your money makes it harder to pursue a money-hoarding strategy for points using the Aqua bonuses, but that's strategy for you. Pick an option and go with it.

That is a cool avatar. But that is not a helpful comment.

I realise this idea is not everyone's cup of tea, but then nothing is. Clearly at least some people thought this one was ok, and enough people have written to me over the series as a whole saying they like them and please do more that I am, well, encouraged to do more.

The format would work well for me if someone else was doing them. It gives a sixty second overview of the main impressions BGG users overall have of a game. It's shorter than most reviews in total word count, really highlights the main points, and personally I can take away about the same information as I get from most reviews.

Edit: Technically, I can even create these for games I've never seen or played, for my own interest, and it tells me what I most want to know out of reviews of a game. But I wouldn't publish one on a game I haven't played.

I reckon you pretty much "get what you paid for" if you open a review titled "10 Word Review".

I find Joe's reviews extremely instructive. And while I don't mind reading long articles/reviews, I do appreciate how Joe manages to fit so many observations into so little space. Thanks Joe!

Good point!
It is too a review. It just has an unusual format. I like it!

I recently bought the game and have played it 3 times now. I cannot recommend it.

I understand that it is targeted toward family and young gamers, but there just isn't enough meat to the game to keep us interested. It is cute and somewhat fiddly. My nine-year old liked it enough, but I fear it won't function as a "family" game since my older children probably won't play.

We all like Carcassonne, Ticket To Ride, and Settlers. My oldest (high school student) also plays Caylus and Puerto Rico.

The expansions add a little depth and a bit of being able to mess with other players. It is not a deep game but certainly is deeper than TTR.

You are fortunate in having players that are looking to play deeper games. Have you tried power grid?

I'd like to get the expansions to try to make the game more interesting. I don't want to pay shipping on just a $7 item just yet, so I'll wait and tack it onto another order.

:shake: My nine year old wants to learn Caylus!

Haven't tried Power Grid yet. My newest complex game is "In the Year of the Dragon", which we're anxious to try out soon.
