I'm surprised that no oneelse has brought this up: the "ladies" in this game actually represent concubines. In ancient China, it is not merely a privilage for a king/lord to take many concubines, it is actually a responsibility for him to plant his seed in as many soils as possible. Hence you get VPs for that.

Here in Hong Kong, from time to time we see a TV drama about the rivalry between concubines in the court.

Alan, I think we all assumed the "ladies" weren't just spending their free time clipping coupons.

We sometimes refer to them as "ho's", although I prefer the title "lovely ladies". The funny thing is that the first time I played, a female opponent refused to acquire any of them until she absolutely had to on the last turn, just on principle. She lost by one VP!
