Fjords – a Little Gem
The first time I saw Fjords, I picked up the box, looked at the picture on the back & thought, “Is this just Carcassonne with hex tiles rather than squares?”. Anyway, I was offered a good price & so decided to give it a go. And I’m glad I did.

The game plays over two phases with each player taking alternate turns.
1. Tile placement & placement of farms.
- place a hex so that it touches at least two already placed tile in such a way that the landscape on the tile’s edges matches the landscape on the adjoining tiles.
- if desirable, place 1 of 4 farms on the just placed tile.
2. Claiming farmland.
- place field disks branching out from farms & previously claimed fields.

The things that I enjoy about Fjords are
1. Its balance – there is strategy & there is luck, there is simplicity & there are difficult choices.
2. Its length – it always feels that it plays for the right length of time – not too long, not too short.

I appreciate that it won’t appeal to all players, but for me, it’s just plain fun.

So far, everyone that I have played this with (except my wife – have to work on this) has enjoyed it.
Two friends are looking at getting their own sets, one has recommended it to his brother & I am looking at getting another set for a gift for some friends.

I thinking playing with a spouse or significant other is what Fjords is made for. Its nothing to heavy, really simple to grasp, so for those who are with non-gamers, its a perfect game for them.

That would be nice. I've gotten to the stage where my wife will at least play it because I want to. My hope is to get to the stage where she enjoys it for the fun game that it is.

Over the weekend I had a game night at my place. Because Fjords is a quickish game, it was perfect to get out while we were waiting for players 3 & 4 to arrive.

I like the Box almost better than the game. It is from my home area. I was at the Pulpit rock or Preikestolen as we call it now on saturday. Its as beautiful as it looks. My hometown Joerpeland, lays in the background on the box by the fjord. Yes it is pretty:meeple:

I'm curious: Could you (or your wife) elaborate a little more on what she doesn't like about the game? Why is she just so-so about it? Of course she's allowed to say, "I just don't like it, OKAY?" But I was wondering if she could tell what she doesn't like.

My wife's first description of playing Fjords was that it felt a bit like playing Othello, in that you had to think too far ahead. I don't see it that way. I think that the luck of the draw & the fact that a tile must be played if it can, means that you can't always plan too far ahead. Often you have to try to work out how to make use of what you've got.
