We are thoroughly enjoying this game, thanks Seaborn!
Can anyone suggest ways that players can kill the hunters of a Priest Hero party though please?

Using the necromancer's ability would appear to be the obvious way, but in the game we played (I was the priest) I bid enough shares for the necromancer that I stopped this from happening by recruiting him myself. Later on I disbanded him, effectively removing the necromancer from the game.

The only other way we could think of was to wait until the Priest used his resurrect/heal ability and then use the assassin's potion or assassin's champion ability. However, neither the assassin nor her potion came up.

Having an "invincible" party caused a few comments about the priest being overpowered, and I must admit I kind of agreed, especially compared to the other two players' heroes (Jester and Sorceress, neither of whose abilities seemed especially useful in our game)
However, this was only the third game we've played, so that's why I'm posting.

It's worth pointing out that even with an "unkillable" party, I still didn't win. I had the gladiator for no shares, plus the monk who doesn't accept gold, so I was playing a "ignore the Shadow and rack up gold" strategy but this wasn't enough to offset the winning bounty.

Nest time we play we have agreed to give each player two heroes and allow them to pick the one they want to use and discard the other - to minimise the risk of ending up with a hero they really don't like.

Does anyone else agree the priest's ability is too powerful? Should it perhaps cost 1 gold to heal?

Cheers,

See some recommended variants I just posted over in another thread, particularly the Hero auction which will help insure that players don't get better Heroes simlpy by being lucky. For regular hunters, the bidding process already insures that more valuable hunters tend to cost more.

Now as for countering the "immortal" party, I'd focus on loading their hunters up with shares (and the Jester cap if you can). You can't kill them, but you can make their owner wish they were dead. Other than that, figure out the prophecy and deny those skills to your opponent. No matter how sturdy their party is, they won't be able to win if they don't have the right skills.

Edit - Oh yes, and you can use the Enchantress or her Potion to steal a Hunter.

Adam, although the very nature of characters' abilities guarantees that some characters are more powerful in certain game situations than others. Some, in fact, are downright useless "paired" with the right set of opposing heroes. That said, I think you hit the nail on the head: Having the most powerful character or combo doesn't necessarily - and in fact often doesn't - win you the game. That, for me, is much of the fun of Hunting Party: The distraction factor. Like Agricola's minor improvement and occupation cards, the CCG-like possibilities with Hunting Party's cards tempts you to flex them, and see what happens, often losing focus on the goal. Yes, they can be powerful and win it for you, but you're at least as likely to spend too much time building your engine. Balance is the key!

I'm very happy you are enjoying the game!

I think Nathan pretty much summed up my thoughts.

Thanks for the replies - encumbering hunters with shares or stealing them are two good ideas we hadn't thought of.

@ seaborn - I had a real job finding your game in England. Even the stands at the UK Games Expo hadn't heard of it. In the end I had to import it via eBay!

Yea, sorry about that. The distribution system in the boardgame world makes it difficult. Ebay is a good place to find it though at a very nice cost.
