So, any promo stuff with this one?
I was wondering if there were plans to have promo materials for this game similar to those released with certain parts of LNOE? There are a list of ten hard-to-get promo cards (along with another 10 which are generally available, as well as a promo scenario card) which you basically had to be in the right place at the right time to get. I've spent a fair bit of effort to collect all ten promo cards and I'll admit that I did my fair share of complaining about it. Now that I have the promo cards, I like them and I actually do use them quite often. However, it has frustrated me how they're released -- for a limited time, with certain purchases. If you've missed out on one of these limited-time offers, you've missed the card. Jason seems fairly inflexible on this, which of course is his right since it's his company. However, for some of us this is a big deal because the collection would otherwise feel incomplete.

I have no real desire to start up the whole promo card debate again, but I would like to know in advance if there are going to be limited-release, exclusive (etc.) promo stuff. If this is going to be the case, I will need to think hard before getting this game. This is not intended to be a commentary on promo materials; honestly, I just would like to know ahead of time before diving in head first.

I openly admit that I do feel the need to have a complete collection, and I know that other people don't understand, but I also know that a lot of people do understand. So, please let us know. Thanks.

I was under the impression that all the promo cards for LNoE were simply cards that are included in either the base game or expansions but with alternate "art"?

Yes, absolutely true. Each of the 10 limited-release promo cards are alternate-art, meaning that they're already in the game, they just have a different picture. However, they're also fully playable and actually released with the intention of being used. Some are better than others, but it's great to be able to throw in a second chainsaw and a few other cards into a really tough scenario. It's good variability. Plus, the alternate artwork is cool. Also, like I said, I like a "complete" set, whatever that entails, and I feel that these promo cards do complete the set.

Here's the list of promo cards for LNOE, if you don't know what they are:

Promo 001: Back to Back (Alt. Image Growing Hunger)
Promo 002: Loner (Alt. Image Growing Hunger)
Promo 003: Jumper Cables (Alt. Image Growing Hunger)
Promo 004: Scratch and Claw (Alt. Image Growing Hunger)
Promo 005: T.J., Thoroughbred (Alt. Image Growing Hunger)
Promo 006: Despair (Alt. Image Growing Hunger)
Promo 007: Chainsaw (Alt. Image LNOE)
Promo 008: Braaains! (Alt. Image LNOE)
Promo 009: Flashlight (Alt. Image Growing Hunger)
Promo 010: "The Line is Dead!" (Alt. Image Growing Hunger)

Promo 011: "I'll See You in Hell!" (Stock Up!)
Promo 012: Town Secrets (Stock Up!)
Promo 013: "A Little Help Here..." (Stock Up!)
Promo 014: Unstoppable (Stock Up!)
Promo 015: Wireless Radio (Stock Up!)
Promo 016: "No...It can't be!" (Stock Up!)
Promo 017: Guitar (Sp. Ed. LNOE Soundtrack)
Promo 018: Dance of the Dead (Sp. Ed. LNOE Soundtrack)
Promo 019: Cigar (Stock Up!)
Promo 020: Legions of the Dead (Stock Up!)

Promo S01: Stock Up! Scenario (Stock Up!)

I still want to know, however, if there will be promo material for A Touch of Evil.

I hope they do :) I don't see a problem with there being promos for attending events.

Maybe I'll call the Reds Front Office and bitch because I can't go to the next bobble head night and that it's unfair that there's an exclusive for that game and not the game I went to.

Or maybe I'll call Blizzard and see if I can get one of the Promo Packs from Blizz Con because I couldn't make it to that.

Or hell, I was watching G4's coverage of SDCC 08 and there are some pretty cool exclusives there. Maybe if I call the right person....

They're alternate ART cards. They aren't cards you don't already have. They simply have different pictures. Hardly integral to the game. I'm a completist as much as the next guy, but not buying a game because I may not be able to get all of the non-integral alternate art cards? Come on, now....

A Touch of Evil WILL have Alternate image promo cards as well as web-exclusive Supplements (numbered as promos - like the 'Stock Up!' Supplement for LNOE). The main purpose for these promos is to reward people for taking part in contest, events, and conventions as well as to give players an extra bonus for buying direct from our official webstore.

We try to make all of these promos available on multiple occasions and/or consistantly available with a particular item. The only two concrete rules we really have for Promos is that they are Alternate Art only (so they do not have to directly affect gameplay) and that we do not sell promo cards outright.

If I am 'inflexible', it is only on these two concrete rules for Promos. Promos are meant to be a cool and fun extra for both players and collectors. Selling Promos directly cheapens them and defeats the purpose (it's not really special in any way if you can just buy them outright). It is also very frustrating to have new and unique promo items that are only available once and if you miss out, you just don't get to enjoy that new and exciting game feature (hence the Alt. Image Art only).

We will start taking pre-orders for ATOE on the official webstore very soon and there will be promos available with the pre-orders as well as the preview copies sold at GenCon.

Normally I hate promos with a fashion but I don't mind the way FFP do them - they are more 'collectables' than anything else since they don't add any new gameplay.

Aah, there's the lame bout of sarcasm people like you just seem to know I crave. Knew you couldn't resist! Ask a simple, polite question and just wait for this shit to pile in. Board Game Geek, fail me not!

Now that I feel the need to break this can of worms open, first, I did not say that I would not buy the game based on whether or not there would be exclusive promos. I said I'd have to think carefully about it, and now that I know I will think carefully about it. I'm not just committing to a game here, I'm now officially committing to spending time and money buying the internet exclusives, many of which I don't want (like the red zombies), so that I can get the cards I want. I stayed away from Battlelore for this exact reason: I knew that there was going to be neverending expansions, promos, etc. That's a little different than this, but only a little. I know in advance that if there are going to be promos, then I am going to spend the money to get them. It's just a decision that I wanted to make ahead of time. Really, I only think it's fair.

Jason,

Thanks for the very honest reply. And, by the way, "inflexible" wasn't meant to be an insult; merely an observation. After all, they are "concrete" rules which are, by definition, inflexible.

I've said it before and I'll say it again here: IF a company is going to do limited-availability promos, than the way you guys do it is absolutely the way to go.

Thanks again for the answer.

I can take or leave the promo stuff but I second(or third or whatever)
the way FFP does them.

I'm just waiting for the pre-orders to go up:D
Yeah, they're totally optional, and if I luck into one that'd be cool and appreciated.

But they are optional.

Agreed. Totally optional. However, you actually need to have them to have the option of using them.

In all fairness, Karl, if you were really just asking a "simple, polite question" and didn't want anyone to comment on any of your other thoughts/habits/addictions, you probably shouldn't have mentioned them in your first post. I'm just sayin'.

I don't even consider "Stock Up" to be a promo set. I know they number it like one, but the cards are all unique to that set and it seems to always be readily available for purchase from the website. It's really more of a mini-expansion than a limited edition promo.

I like the way FFP does its real promo cards, in that they are simply alternate art for existing cards, no alternate rules at all. I really dislike when games come out with awesome new features and hand them out at conventions that 99% of their fans cannot attend....plus it always seems like most of the people getting the promos don't care a lick for the game, they're just picking up some free stuff. Bravo to FFP for letting everybody play with everything and not creating a have/have-not division amongst gamers...it shows real respect for the fans.
