Hogwarts: House Cup Challenge
NECA proudly presents Hogwarts: House Cup Challenge, an adventure board game based on the first five Harry Potter films. The game allows 2 - 4 players to portray Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Neville in their quest to win the House Cup for Gryffindor.

Players move their characters around the board encountering Adventure Cards and increasing their Knowledge, Skill, and Honor. As the Characters' abilities grow, they will advance through five years of training at Hogwarts and face progressively harder challenges.

---------------------------

Designer's Notes

With Hogwarts, we wanted to create an adventure board game with a lot of flavor, a decent amount of depth, and a minimum degree of luck. There are no dice in the game. Characters can move up to 3 spaces each turn, and once Characters have achieved a certain level of ability in a particular area, they can accomplish adventures of a certain difficulty automatically.

Even the Adventure Cards that the players encounter are often set up by the players themselves. We created a system where players attempt to build a "hand path" (i.e. a sequence of cards in their hands) so that they could encounter adventures in a certain order for greater efficiency. Of course, some adventures do pop onto the board randomly as well, and the players can also play difficult Adventure Cards on their opponents before they're ready, especially if their opponents dare to wander the Forbidden Forest...

And did I mention that the board is enormous? :)

I'll be glad to answer any questions you may have about the game. It is scheduled to release in the early Fall (the printers are finishing it up right now).

Thanks!

Andrew

Looks fun, one little nit, why does the game end when Gryffindor gets 500 points? What if my preferred house is Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff or Slytherin? Not much of a House Cup Challenge if only one House can ever win.

Thanks, Jason. There are some cool images running around the internet of a production sample at the San Diego Comic Con (I think the images originated at mugglenet.com or snitchseeker.com). The artists (Christopher Guild and James Parks) did a nice job on the board art, and the print quality of the board is top notch also.

Hi, JAE.

Actually, you have hit upon one of the first tough choices we had to make when designing the parameters of the game. Either we could have the four Houses compete, or we could focus on four of the main Characters from Gryffindor (in which case we are only tracking Gryffindor's progress). Since the publisher is depending upon mass market sales (although we of course designed with both mass market and hobby market in mind), we thought it best to focus on the four main characters of the films.

Essentially, the purpose of the Gryffindor scoring mechanic is to track the progress of the game. As players score points, Gryffindor also scores points, thereby signalling the change of years (every 100 points earned in aggregate by the players, the next year begins) and ultimately, the end of the game (when Gryffindor hits 500).

Thanks,

Andrew

So, the player who contributes the most points to Gryffindor's inevitable victory is the winner? OK, I guess if you have to listen to the money men...

Personally I think the publishers underestimate the interest level of their fan base. Now, if the players each played a Head-of-House (McGonagall, Flitwick, Sprout and of course Snape) and you have the students of your house at your beck and call, that would rock my socks. Plus, add a little student floating (Neville would be of great use to Sprout) and give each Head-of-House unique abilities based on the subject they teach, and whoo boy that's a game I wanna play!

Add to it the house rivalries on the Quidditch pitch...influential parents nosing in on the faculty and the "grown up" politics of the Ministry affecting how the staff can do their job. AND how about a random Dark Arts teacher that keeps changing as the game progresses.

Can you imagine how much people will fall all over themselves to play Snape and get to control the activities of Malfoy? Drool!

But I digress...

Hi, Bryan.

Interestingly, we have talked internally about allowing players the option to play characters from different Houses if expansions are printed to reflect the remaining three films (Deathly Hallows will be split into 2 films). Assuming the initial game does well, we would hopefully have more wiggle room with potential expansions.

Having seen a copy and looking over some of the prototype pieces, I had a Talisman for Kids feel to the game (in a good way!). If the game plays like the rules and cards suggest, it looks good so far. Good luck!

Thanks, Matt. There is a bit of a Talisman feel to the game (I played Talisman like a nut in the 80s!), but, fortunately, a lot less luck than Talisman! ;)

Your wish is my command, Jens. You can download the rules here:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/file/info/34316

Experienced gamers should feel free to skip the first two pages ("The First Play Rules") unless they're interested in teaching the game to non-gamers or younger players.

If you have any questions about the rules, please post them at the game's BGG Entry:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/37683

Thanks!

Andrew
