A Song of Ice and Fire: The Adventure Game
I was lucky to be the first to playtest this game on Thursday morning of Gencon.

A Song of Ice and Fire: The Adventure Game is set in the land of Westeros. In fact, the map looks very similar to A Game of Thrones. Players each control one unique hero from one of the different houses. Each hero has unique stats, health, morale, and special abilities.

Your goal is to have the highest scores in each of three categories at the end of six rounds of play. If you reach 20 in all three categories then you automatically win.

Each round you receive a given number of action points based on a story card that is drawn at the beginning of the round. These actions points are then used to move, fight battles, draw and use cards, and rest. You gain points by fighting and winning encounters and by completing various tasks as assigned by the cards you play.

There are tons of cards in this game. There is a deck of cards that is specific to each house and then there is a separate deck of "raven" cards. The house cards generally give you allies, bonuses, items, and story plots to complete. The raven cards are used to attack your foes.

I played in House Tyrell as the Queen of Thorns whose quote still just said, "quote". Despite being a woman of few words she rocked the Westeros universe and easily won the game, mostly due to my elite skill and gaming prowess.

I had to sign an agreement that said I would not talk about any of my comments or opinions on the game. The main reason for this is that the game is a work in progress. Elements of the game could be changed and then my comments would be irrelevant...

Anyway, what I can say is that if you like adventure type games with a character-building feel then this will probably be a great game for you.

Thanks Mike Z for the playtest!

This sounds wonderful....I am sure that I will be compelled to purchase this. I have yet to play WoW:TaG -- I may hold out for this game instead. Is there an estimated release season (e.g., Spring 09)?

I'm curious how it translates as an adventure game, though. The books certainly don't scream "adventure" to me...

"Adventuring" really does seem a little bit forced to me in the Westeros world, but count me in as a definitive buyer!

Are you sure you should then talking about the game here? Not that I complain ...

When is there not a ton of cards in an FFG game?

How on earth did I not hear about this game earlier? Is this what LotR the adventure game has turned into, or something? I'm pretty sure there hasn't been anything about this on FFG's site, has there?

Well, looks like I should start saving up!

Plenty of adventuring can be accomplished within this setting ... consider the paths of the many characters within the book:

You may just be that Stark child trying to avoid being tossed out of the window! ...
Or a monarch trying to avoid a beheading ...
Or a little girl wondering aimlessly ...
Or a dwarf sticking crossbow bolts into father's gut ...
Or a dead wife who had witnessed her child's murder ...

Let the plots flow!

And this does confirm my indecision regared WoW:tAG--I think I can pass on that since I would much rather adventure in Martin's fantasy world. Yes, I believe I will wait for this Song to sing.

FFG had a complete info blackout on the game. FFG has several games that they haven't announced to the world yet. This was one of them.

Don't you just die every two turns and have to draw a new character? :D

Dying is addressed in the rules. You become "A Legend" and can still influence what happens on the board and even win the game.

True, however the reference was so vague in the details about whom, when, and where that a person reading the book for the first time could come upon it without it being entirely spoiled.

It didn't quite reach the level of Homer Simpson famously saying "I can't believe Darth Vader is Luke's father!" as he was walking past the movie theater line.

No, that would be Dune. Poor, poor Duncan. Can't they just let the man stay dead? :shake:

I just hope it plays better than WoW: TAG, that was disappointing. Is this the new direction for FFG? Tide of Iron: The Adventure Game, TI3: TAG ?
