Question about Scoring
Okay, I'm most likely reading into it too much, but we're a little confused on how scoring works. How is your score calculated? Is it based solely on the number of cars you use to link your two cities? Or is based on the number that appears on the bottom of your ticket?

I know, it's probably going to be considered the most basic, easy-to-grasp-concept, but somehow we've gotten ourselves to the point where nothing makes sense anymore.

Up is down, black is white, in is out, opposite day is opposite... Jane! Stop this crazy thing!

Thanks.

Your final score is the sum total of the values of your train legs (1 for a 1-car connection between any two cities, 2 for a 2-car connection, 4 for a 3, 7 for a 4, etc), PLUS the number on all the Tickets for which you successfully completed a network linking the named cities, MINUS the numbers on all the tickets whose cities you did not join in your network. PLUS the longest-route bonus if you had the longest continuous route.

And to expand on Mark's answer, the connections are scored as they are actually completed. Then at game end, points are added for each ticket completed and having the longest train, and subtracted for tickets not completed.

It may not seem like there's a difference beetween a running score or scoring all at the end, but the running score gives players a rough idea who is leading at any one point, and thus can influnce decisions on track-laying.

well, veterans will have an idea without doing the scoring in real time as opposed to doing it all at the end. Since I'll sometimes end up playing with newbies, I like to score as we go along as the rules say we're supposed to indeed give those newbies an idea of how they and everybody else stands as the progresses. Sadly, we end up counting score at game's end to make sure it was accurate, as there's a chance we missed a few points here and there. :shake:

Oh, and please chime in about that in this poll

We played a learning game last week. Not only were we scoring wrong--we were using the number on the ticket to indicate how many cars you were getting points for--we were laying down routes only when you had the *entire* route in your hand (we were also putting all cards on the table, but that's part of the learning game).

But we played with another couple last night and it was good to have a better grasp of scoring and playing.

Thanks guys.
