A Luck Driven Game that doesn't FEEL Luck Driven
I just finished introducing Battle Cry to a first-timer who was not a wargamer. Simply presenting him with a player aid was enough for him to completely understand the game - a huge bonus for my group of non-gamers.

I will not argue with anyone who asserts that the results of this game are more dependent on luck than anything else. Your options in movement and attack are dictated by cards whose effects are deeply chaotic, and on top of that fire is resolved by all-or-nothing dice labels.

That being said, the game is much more enjoyable that it sounds, because it doesn't feel like it's decided by luck. This is mostly because of the card system. Your cards present you with sequencing challenges that require difficult tradeoffs and decisions no matter what your situation. As a result, you have a lot of control - no matter how much your fate is actually decided by luck, you can greatly effect how that fate plays out. As a result, this is one of the few games I've enjoyed no matter how inevitable defeat may be.

I only wish the mitigation of randomness extended to dice based combat resolution. Nevertheless, this doesn't change how much I enjoy the challenge of this game, and am willing to play no matter what cards I get stuck with!

Hi Sightreader,

Do you play with the orignal rules set or with some of the assorted house rules posted here?

I agree with all you have said here but the scenarios, layout and army make up shift the game just as much, which is why we enjoy playing twice, once on each side.

Actually, though my son is a gamer, he did a quick read through the cheat sheet I made and we played the double size Gettysburg game first and he loved it and was eager to play the game again from the other side.

Great little game.

Best regards, Tony

Oh, it never occurred to me to check for house rules. We play with the original rules... although I'm sure we're making some mistakes.

Oh yes, I did forget to mention that. The variety and customizability is one of the strongest aspects of the game.

I must say that luck plays a very minor role in the game as i see it.
I have just started to play the game and being a wargamer for 25 years
:cry:god i feel old now i found the game very good to play.

The "command cards":what:
Every general sitting on his horse on the hill looking over his army would love every single unit to do what he would like it to do at the right time.
So i see the deal of these cards to take into account bad communications and poor information about enemy movements.
Also some genarels get a better choice of cards (5 instead of 4).

If you play one card after the other because it's the only one you can play, your in for a load of trouble.
Miss a turn and just discard a card and see if you get sometime better to use in a sustained attack or defence.

The "Battle dice":what:
If every bullet and cannon ball counted that would be a very short war indeed.
A mass of infantry moving very slowly is easier to hit than a small group of caverly charging around the battle field.
I think the symbols on the dice take this into account very nicely.

As the "The General" of the army you need to decide where, when and who to engage for the best chance of a positive outcome.

Like i said i have just started to play the game and i hope this idea of the game does not wear off.

Any game you draw cards or roll a dice has the element of luck ,i like to think of it as
"The Fog Of War"in this game.

Chess is good if you don't like luck:p.

Command well and the victories will come......:arrrh:

thx
Amos

Yes, luck seems to be close to a historical level. For the most part, it shifts your options rather than completely blocks you, but yes - just like a real battle - there are times where you won't make any mistakes and yet still lose - but that happens in real life too.
