Announcing Washington DC / The Berlin Wall and the Age of Steam Box
AoS Team is pleased to announce a pair of bonus releases for 2008: Age of Steam Expansion - Washington DC and The Berlin Wall and [gameid=38262]. AoS Team has heard the cries of North American AoS fans, and are pleased to announce that these releases will be made available initially to North Americans (as well as Central and South Americans) and will later be released at Essen.

Washington DC and Berlin are another pair of maps created by highly regarded Age of Steam expansion designer Alban Viard. Washington DC focuses on the infamous freeways of the US capital. While the interstate can allow for quick goods transportation, it also becomes increasingly clogged as the game progresses and eventually becomes nearly impassable. The Berlin Wall, meanwhile, takes Age of Steam back to the era of the Cold War and the divided city of Berlin. Troop garrisons impede goods movement for much of the game, and the wall also presents an imposing obstacle. Of course, the fall of the wall in 1989 changes everything. These expansions will be printed on the plasticized paper that Alban has used since the Moon/Mars expansion, and will be cut into two pieces (not folded because the plasticized paper cracks where it is folded in a rather nasty fashion) so they fit into:

The Age of Steam Box, meanwhile, is a useful new accessory for all Age of Steam fans. The two-piece box, manufactured Ludo Fact in Germany, offers a sturdy, stylish way to transport your standard size Age of Steam expansions. The Age of Steam Box features a check list of all of the currently released hard board and soft board expansions that will fit in it.

The price structure for these releases are as follows:

Expansion Only: $30 + $10 shipping
Expansion + Box: $40 + $10 shipping

Special shipping rates will be made available for people who wish to purchase multiple items:

1 Expansion + Box Set: $10
2 sets: $12
3 sets: $14
4/5 sets: $20
Please inquire if you want to order more than 5.

Expansion Only:
1: $10
2: $11
3: $12
4: $13
5: $14
Please inquire if you want to order more than 5.

These releases will be available for order by people in the western hemisphere from September 5th until Essen. Be aware that this is NOT a pre-order, when the map and box become available for order, they will also be ready for shipping via air mail. This takes around a week for people in the United States.

The remainder of the print run will be made available at Essen, and then through various retailers. Please do not contact either Alban or Michael about ordering the set prior to September 5th, there will be enough to meet demand, do not worry. :meeple:

This new release will be available initially for direct order from the publisher exclusively on BGG. If there is a marketplace entry that fits your needs, please purchase the expansion using that. If the appropriate type of entry is currently missing or if you want to order in quantity, simply send a Geekmail to Alban Viard (user id: Nabla) or Michael Webb (user id: CortexBomb) to place your order. Rest assured that BGG will be compensated properly for all out of marketplace sales.

Those who wish to pick up these releases at Essen may do so. The combined set will retail for 25 Euros, and a pre-order must be placed with Alban by sending an e-mail to ageofsteam08 AT yahoo DOT fr. Essen pre-orders are being taken now.

Final note: Boxes will be available as a separate item, and can be purchased for $15 plus $10 shipping by GeekMailing Alban or I for those of you who just want something to store your existing expansions in.

Attached is a small picture of the Washington DC map. Pictures of the box will be made available shortly.

I'm trying sooooooo hard to say no to more AoS expansions. After the Winsome Essen Pack and Bezier's whack of expansions this year, the bank is broken.

I believe I've successfully resisted the temptation to order this... wait, what's that you say? An Age of Steam box?! OMG! Brilliant! SOLD! Yeah, throw in the expansion while you're at it.
... my wife is gonna kill me. :shake:

Seriously though, Michael, are we going to start seeing some older AoS Team titles available in North America for a reasonable price? That would be great. Just take your time. :p

There haven't been discussions about that yet. If the demand eventually rises for a particular older expansion or two, I think a reprint could eventually happen though. (see: Montreal reprint, the reprint of Moon a while back by Alban). Don't quote me on this though!

This is very cool...

Now, if someone independently wealthy would kindly donate me their estate so I can quit my job and have the time to play all these games.

You know, a while back I offered my services as a fairly skilled, traveling Age of Steam player for hire...

I think the previously stated terms were cost of travel, couch, board (including local beer and/or single malt), and a flat fee of 25$ per day. Weekly rate discounts available.

If you really needed more than 1 extra player, I could probably round up some of my development group for similar terms...

Availability dictated by academic calendar.

Is there any way to purchase the box only? I would love to have a nice box for my maps, but just don't need more maps I cannot play.

Also, is there any chance some of these will be available at BGG.CON? If so, count me in!

The Age of Steam box #1 may contain 5/6 mounted boards + other expansions of an A4 size like the Montréal reprint, 20 000 rails under the sea, Puerto Rico or other Asplach's expansions, even those released for the Essen08

The older unmounted Bezier maps and the Steam Bothers maps will not fit.

Steam Brothers maps are particular because of the plastified paper.
We have prefered to not list them on the front cover because we do not think that fans would want to bold them to fit in the box

Of course, this is why they won't be listed on the cover.

The 1830's PA / Nor Cal map will fit, so it is listed, as are most of the recent bezier expansions.

The older ones can, of course, be folded by the owner if they want to make them more portable. Ditto for those who own the first print run of Montreal.

All future AoS Team releases will be formatted to fit the box. Note that this is starting with the WDC / Berlin Wall maps which will be cut into two pieces so they will fit in the box. The original Essen releases from Alban (Chile, Egypt, CCCP) are not cut and are the same large sheet format, so they will not fit unless the owner is willing to cut or fold them (note that folding the paper used tends to create some nasty fissures, that is why the WDC/BW maps are being cut instead of folded). This was a somewhat unfortunate circumstance that came about because of the late genesis for the box idea. Alban had already paid for the printing of the original maps when he decided to release the box to go with the WDC/BW release.

re: BGG Con:

There is no plan in place to have them available there. Neither Alban or I attend it, and though I can't speak for him, I have no future plans to visit because of the location (i.e.: it is too far to drive to and I do not want to pay and deal with the inconvenience of flying just for gaming) and because it is very close temporally to Great Lakes Games, an annual event that I always go to.

FWLIW that is my preferred map format/presentation. I'd like them even more if they were uncut single sheets.

Understood.

Based on what we know of the market, the unfolded sheet has vocal proponents, but it creates a lot more trouble than it's worth. They are harder for retailers to stock (because many do not have mailers that fit that size, and the items cannot be packaged easily with larger orders), they are harder for end users to store, and unless you are used to carrying plexi (which many train gamers are, but many AoS players are not train gamers in general) the non-stiff format ones create an inconvenience because they curl/try to return to a rolled state.

At the end of the day, we feel that more people (and our friends, the retailers) will be happy with the folded format, hence the adoption of this format for WDC/BW, the reprint of Montreal, and all future releases.

so you're saying they'll be available at Great Lakes Games though?

If you guys want me to bring some there, by all means, just let me know. You'll obviously be waiting a while though, since these will be shipping as soon as they are ordered (i.e.: September 5th and on) whereas GLG is post-Essen.

So basically, if I'm understanding this right, we wait until Sept 5th, then find an appropriate marketplace link for the item/quantity combo we want being offered by either of you two, and purchase that way? If we don't see the particular item/quantity mix we want being offered in the marketplace, THEN geekmail one of you guys to set up a transaction?

Anyone checked if DC/Berlin and/or the box are in the BGG database yet for easy searching if I don't feel like tracking this thread and don't have you guys on my buddy list? Just trying to figure out exactly the easiest way to do this once the 5th rolls around.

I also second the interest in your older maps that aren't currently being published anymore/never were.

#1: Correct. We are both going to be listing the game, so hopefully we will be able to keep up with demand to some extent. I know from dealing with the original release of Montreal that we'll likely be behind for the first few days though, that's why the Geekmail option will be available. (This is also, incidentally, why I've been lobbying for updates to the marketplace code so it is easier for sellers to list multiple copies of the same game at once...as it stands we need to manually re-enter games after each one sells, and we both have normal jobs that consume most of our spare time!)

#2: I added them both on Thursday. They will show up when they are approved. Adding games to the database is unpredictable, sometimes it happens immediately, sometimes it takes a few days. We decided to announce early to give the entry time to be approved. The plan is to have the expansion by itself available in the marketplace under the expansion listing, and the box with the expansions packed in it to be listed under the box entry.

Edit: Update: Both of these items are now in the database...see:

But at least *I* would like to get a large box that would fit those large maps plus two halfsize inserts in which I could place the regular sized maps!

I don't understand why they would curl. My copies were delivered laminated and still lies as flat as when I received them 3 years ago. And thanks to lamination I have never needed to use my plexiglass plate either.

Sounds like yours were shipped flat? Aren't most rolled to accommodate shipping? Once they've been rolled its nearly impossible to get them as flat again.
