I just read on the Spielbox web page that there will be a promo card (or, to be more exact, of course a pack of 10+1 of those cards) "Gesandter" (Ambassador / Envoy / Messenger?) available for purchase at the Vienna Spielfest. Apart from a very tiny picture of the card (see http://www.spielbox.de/php/aktuell.php4?anz_id=1887) on which you can read nothing but its cost of "4", I could not find out anything about its function. Does anybody know more about it?

The last sentence says something about putting cards in hand. The first line also contains the word Karten (Card).

From Boardgamenews
"The Dominion promo is a new card called Gesandter ("Envoy" in English). The text is in German and a bit blurry, but I believe that the card allows you to draw five cards, then have an opponent choose and discard one of those cards. This card will be available in packs of eleven: one for the randomizer deck and ten to be used in the game itself. "

You had to know this was coming. I'm not going to enjoy it much if I'm having to chase down these small expansions.

You don't have to do anything.
This is not like a collectible card game, where if you don't get every new expansion, you'll be at a disadvantage against someone who did. It simply expands your basic game, and everyone gets to use them.
Or you could pretend you have it, and just figure that the actual games you played happened not to select it as one of your 10.

I realize I don't have to do anything. It is frustrating though when limited promo cards are released for a game. Flying Frog does it correctly by just having alternate art. When something like this comes out in the back of my mind I will always think I have an incomplete game. Silly I know. I love this game and will play it often when others bring it, but now I probably won't buy a copy for myself.

which means you'll get to play it even less than if you had your own copy. And there's a good chance that the people who bring it won't have all the expansions either. Are you going to say "Ha, I'll not play your game, it's incomplete"? If not, why on earth would the same apply to your own copy?
I'm really missing the logic.

I'm really missing the logic. The Completionist gene has a powerful influence. Knowing that he will feel compelled to search and search and search and buy and buy and buy, he will avoid that trap altogether by not buying a base game. Other games have taught him that lesson (I'm looking at YOU, MtG.) But he need not fear, for MY copy will sustain us, nurture us, and yea, verily... enrich us... one copper at a time. Will I seek out promos? Not foreign-language ones, nor will I pay exorbitant prices for English ones. But if I can get them at a fair price, why not?

Re: Dominion promo card "Gesandter" at the Vienna Spielfest
The promo card will indeed be available at the Spielfest in Vienna. I have spoken with the organizers and they have not yet determined how it will be distributed. Their primary concern is that it go to as many who want it as possible, rather than a few people taking several copies each. Thus, they are still working through various ways they can make this happen. In the end, they may offer it for a small donation or some such. That, they will announce as we get closer to the event. I have included a copy of the English version of the card, which will be available some time after the event in Austria. Again, the exact method of distribution has not been determined, but unlike other promotions from other companies, I have no plan to make this "limited" and I plan to make every effort to make it as available as possible to everyone who wants it. The text for those who cannot read it is: Reveal the top 5 cards of your deck. The player to your left chooses one for you to discard. Draw the rest. Jay Rio Grande Games

I don't think the problem's going to be a big one. I wouldn't let the fears of unattainable promo cards influence your buying decision, especially because of one major factor - this isn't like Heroscape promos where you'll find yourself facing an opponent that has figures you can't get... if the game of Dominion you're playing has promo cards in the supply you have just as much chance of getting them as your opponents do. Plus the availability of another deck of action cards doesn't make or break your game.
I know that doesn't help those with the unfortunate Completionist gene, but in case some of you were wavering based on what's been said above I wanted to throw in my 2 coppers.

I'd like to see a "police" card that lets you trash (put in jail) another player's just played thief card.

Jay Rio Grande Games My hero! Indeed! I think if I were to look at my shelves of games I'd find the most common publisher would be RGG.

Implications of this card: In a deck that has very little bloat, this could be a deadly card to have. It may be less useful in larger, less tuned decks, although as the player who chooses can't block everything, it can still be a very useful card. My only worry is its cost; 4 puts it in the realm of making the Smithy be taken less often. The issue with making it cost 5, thugh, is that it would only allow those who get a 5/2 to start, whereas a cost of 4 means that everyone can choose to take it at the beginning.

I never said it was a CCG but when expansions come out and they are nigh impossible to get it kind of ruins some of the fun because I KNOW it's out there and I don't get to play with it. Thanks for the quick reply Jay, I had a feeling it would be available somehow. This card could be interesting if it gives you a chance to get rid of someone's moat and then come at them with some vicious attacks.

I'm really missing the logic. I know its silly and illogical. I would have no problem playing the game if someone owns it. The problem would be for me to purchase it and then not be able to get an expansion/promo item. Its the collector in me and I have hated it for years. I can't explain it, just the way it is. I have been able to overcome it a couple times. With Blue Moon not having the German promo cards not available here does not bother me. The LNOE alt image cards cause me a little trouble but the fact its just alt art and not new abilities helps me overcome it. If I saw a full set offered on ebay I would probably go after them though. I am glad to see English cards will eventually be available to purchase for this set. Looking forward to playing many more times and purchasing the game.

Just include it with the next expansion. Promo geeks and completists will still get the expansion and us mere mortals will eventually get the card in question. No hard feelings!

Jay is normally not keen on promos, but has agreed to do a couple for Dominion. Word on the street is he doesn't expect more than two for 2008-2009 (counting this one). Alternate art and preview cards were not exciting enough for him. As Jay mentioned, the promo cards will somehow be available to everyone, like on a website somewhere.
Jay gave us very short notice on this promo, and it seemed good to have something that had actually been in the hands of playtesters, so this is an outtake from the entirely hypothetical first expansion. I like the card fine, but cut it for being too similar to Smithy. It's not necessarily obvious which to buy when both are on the table, but you do the same kinds of things with them. Anyway it had been tested and seemed fine for a promo card. The entirely hypothetical second promo card will be something more exotic.

So, when Jay makes the promo(s) available, will they be piecemeal or packaged together? Or will it purely be a Print-and-Play Affair?

Since there is only one known promo, your first question makes no sense, unless you mean, "You've said too much, Donald X.," in which case, that sure is an odd way to say that, but I totally see what you mean. And I don't see how promo cards could be anything other than actual cards.

I understand Paul to mean "OK, so like 95% of the world, I'm not going to Vienna, won't be at Gencon/Origins/whatever it is where the *second* promo hinted at might be available, and I don't want to buy off Ebay. When you say that Jay will make the promos available, I know that the genuine article will be at cons, but will he be adding both cards into a later expansion, making them available by mail order, or simply putting them on the web somewhere to be download3d and printed out?" Though TBH it was pretty clear put the way Paul put it. I have a completely different question. First expansion - when? No, really - when?? Because I want more, more, more

Jay's "I have no plan to make this "limited" and I plan to make every effort to make it as available as possible to everyone who wants it." Reads to me like he's heading ebay off at the pass. They won't be limited. Whether it's mail-order or future expansion is unstated and probably as yet undecided, but he's said that it will not be limited, so no need to go to eBay scalpers. Donald's "I don't see how promo cards could be anything other than actual cards." Says to me what I thought was already obvious - "Print and Play" doesn't make sense in a game where card indistinguishability (and shufflability) is vital. Most people don't have the resources in their homes to make indistinguishable cardstock Dominion cards.
