Milarky (#476384),

If I remember correctly there is 74 cards.
72 when your remove the Bear and Bull.
with 8 players, you should have 9 of each commodity card.

Re:how many cards should i have?
Only to use the first deck and replace the cards with the second deck as they wear out.

You can't really play with two decks at once. You need to have one suit of 9 cards per player. Doubling the number of cards in a suit will either increase hand size and make it more difficult to hold and keep track of, or, if less suits are used, make it far too quick to complete a set.

I suppose you could try a variant in which the lower-valued suits have one or two extra cards, making it easier to get a set of 9. That might be fun, as those would be a bit more tempting to try, as they'd be a bit easier. However, I think the whole guess and second-guess of what suit you can complete the quickest works well enough in the original. If you do try something, let us know how it went.

Milarky (#476578),

Deck protectors would be a good idea. My deck has really taken a beating during some lively games. I've considered purchasing another and retiring the one we currently use.

As for playing with a double deck. This amy be very difficult to manage and significantly shorten the game to where it is too easy to complete a set. I know we've tried to play at four players and less and the game just resolves it self too fast to be any fun. With extras to complete a suit I'd guess you'd get the same experience.

Re: how many cards should i have?
Deck protectors for pit. I know I'm already 3 years late in responce but I'm sure you've already gone through 1 maybe 2 sets of protectors. For what? Play the game, lets the cards wear. If the card get too recognizable buy a new game. It cost you the same as replacing sleeves (which you always have to replace all of them because the new ones will look better). Play the game and enjoy it. Give the old cards to someone who doesn't own it and doesn't yet know how all the card are marked. It'll also let you finally start using your second deck.
