Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition » Forums » Reviews
I tried out some Cool Dice for Axis & Allies
Field Marshal Games http://www.fieldmarshalgames.com/ has recently produced a set of dice specifically for Axis & Allies. I bought a set (for GG) and agreed to write how I felt about them after use.

During Christmas, I had a chance to pull out this monster game and give the new dice a try. After having played with these dice here are some comments I have.

1) They are beautiful. The colors are close to the new coloring of the anniversary edition, but they were designed before it's release and so they match exactly with the revised edition.

2) They add a bit of fun. The national symbols are printed instead of the "1" pip so when you see your country's pic come up, you know that's a hit!

3) Mostly I was concerned with QUALITY. When you spend extra to buy cool looking dice you want it to make sure they are going to look as good as the pics and that they will hold up to lots of play.

First, the country logos. When I asked the publisher I got this response on the production process: "They are CUSTOM made with one flat side and made in AAA Nation colors. The symbols are silk screened on (not stickers) so they will NEVER peal or scratch off."

I got 30 dice, 6 for each nationality. One thing that might bother the extreme critic is that 25% of the logos are not printed "dead center" on the dice. They are not off by a big margin but there are some slight variations on logo placement. As far as the regular white pips sides go, they are "dead center" on every side and look just great.

I tested the scratch claim with 50 vigorous fingernail scratches right across the symbols. They held, up, no markings whatsoever.

One of the big disappointments with the original BattleLore dice was that they wore out too fast. So I tested these out by rolling a set of 5 in my wooden dice tower over 250 times where there would be a lot of bumping and possible wear & tear. Afterward, upon inspection, there as no noticeable wear or blurring of the printed image.

If you're just an occasional player--you may not want to spend the extra cash for these. But if you play Axis & Allies regularly, I think these dice would be a fun addition which add some nice extra atmosphere.

It looks like there are no dice for the Italians or Chinese. Do you know if there are plans to make dice for those nations?

We have designed ITALY and CHINA dice for the new edition but these expansions will only be availible on our next production run. These sets were produced BEFORE AAA Ann Edition was released. We will offer the expansion dice to our customers at a discounted rate when they are available.

The older sets, mostly. They used to print the country logo in place of the 1, which is great for A&A. The newer sets put the logo in place of the 6. Plus the new sets come in more expensive dice & unit marker tins, without pictures on the tin to clarify the graphics of the dice (many of the sets are unit logos, rather than national symbols). The old sets just came in blister packs of dice.

Picked up several old Flames of War sets at a convention flea market a while back, dirt cheap. Ditched by someone phasing out the older style dice, but since I had no interest in Flames of War it was a good purchase. They only made Soviet, German, and USA nation symbols in the old sets unfortunately - no Japan, Italy, or UK.

I've checked for the old dice sets on eBay since, and always came up empty. My guess is more than a few A&A enthusiasts snapped up the old Flames of War dice sets.

I also own a set of these dice and they look great. Every time I pull them out I see my friends eyes turn green with envy. These dice are a must buy to spruce up your A&A Anniversary Edition. I can’t wait to get my Italy and China Dice rumored to be out in a couple of months!

Is the Italian set going to feature the same incorrect roundel displayed in the game itself? Just curious. Will the Chinese dice use a Nationalist or Communist emblem?

And will the typo in the map (Afghanistan) be fixed at some future date? Really, Hasbro might consider hiring another proofreader/fact checker.

The decals used on the dice will be exact to those used in AA50 as this COMBAT DICE expansion is made for that game.

Regardless of correct or incorrect, we need the dice colours and decals to match for consistency.
