Event timing / defense rolls
I'm a little fuzzy on the precise effects of events that occur during a sequence of defense rolls in some cases.

1. During an attack on a hex with two units, while resolving the defense roll on the first unit, a Low Crawl occurs and the second unit crawls out of the hex. Does it roll defense? (I'd say, 'yes', based on O27.3.4). More interestingly, which hex does it use for it's terrain modifier, the original hex or the one it crawled to? Logically, I'd say the original hex, but I haven't found a relevant rule (it just makes sense to me).

2. Same scenario, Battle Harden happens and the second unit gains veteran status. Does it gain the morale modifier for the roll? I'd say 'yes', but I'm not sure why.

3. Same scenario, but this time a third unit appears (e.g. the Hero event). Does the new unit roll defense? I'd say 'no', again based on the wording of O27.3.4.

Thanks in advance!

Great game, btw, and great support of it!

You are correct on all counts.

Units in the hex at the time of the fire attack have to make rolls. That means even if they leave because of an event, they will roll. And if they come in from an event, they won't roll.

As for timing, all events are resolved BEFORE play continues, so your other unit will be a Vet when he rolls for his defense. It's like in Europe/Med when a Time Trigger happens and then a unit in the hex being attacked gets a foxhole from a Dig in Action played during the Time Trigger.

E49 is where the Event timing is spelled out, btw.

The various rules on cover and morale state that a unit's morale is the base morale modified by the cover in the hex it currently occupies for all purposes (T81.3.1) So by this interpretation - When making the fire defense roll, you use the morale at the time of the roll.

This then answers your questions.

(1) After the unit has used Stealth to move to an adjacent hex, you use the cover of the new hex when making the fire defense roll.

(2) The morale of the veteran unit is +1 at the time of the roll. As to why? You look at the unit's current morale when making the fire defense roll. Interpret the rule strictly. The targeted unit's morale, modified by cover and command is added to the die roll.

(3) Correct...only units targeted by the original Fire Attack Roll need to make defense rolls.

As mentioned in another thread just nearby - one of the best things to do is ask yourself - "when is the Total Attack Value *locked*"? The answer: when the Attack Roll is made. An Event that occurs *on* that very Roll will *not* change the Total Attack Value - it is locked - and that value must be resolved by all the targeted Defending units.

The same question, "when is the Total Defense Value *locked*"? The answer: when the Defense Roll is made.

For each of Richard's answers just above, the Events in question altered the Defending unit's circumstances JUST BEFORE the Defense Roll (for each unit) was made. Prior to that instant, Events can affect the circumstances of cover and morale.
