Another hit with the wife
I picked up this game shortly before Christmas. I had missed out on a lot of the hype when it first came out, but what I started reading intrigued me. Was it possible to make a great game that was played entirely with cards (and VP markers)?

I read the rules several times before bringing it to the table. Our first play was a little sketchy as we both tried to figure out all the different icons. By the third game we'd figured out the icons and were developing strategies. By the fourth, the wife thrashed me soundly.

So, what makes this game great for us?

Once you figure out the icons, it's a pretty straight-forward. I think it's a neat mechanism that uses cards for playing in front of you, for money and for goods. All the different worlds and developments, as well as the choice of phases to play each round, give great diversity and replayability, but it's not so much that it causes brain cramps. All of our games have been 20 minutes or less, making this a great way to get a game in when we don't have the time to play one of our other favorites. And the fact that it's just cards and a few victory point tokens means hardly any setup. Count out some chips, shuffle some cards and you're ready!

But even though it's easy to get into, it's definitely got some depth. There are enough different kinds of cards to play to a number of different strategies, but with the need for flexibility depending on the draw. This is one that neither of us will master for some time.

We both are avid sci-fi readers, so the them is a hit with us. The artwork reminds me of a lot of the movie posters and book covers that were coming out when I was younger. I love Twilight Imperium, but hardly ever have the time. This is a great way for me to get a sci-fi 'fix' in 20 minutes or so.

Race for the Galaxy is one that comes off our shelf quite a bit, and is sure to come off the shelf a lot in the future. If you want a game that's fairly easy to learn, but has some fairly deep strategies and a cool sci-fi theme, this is one to look at a little closer.

My wife isn't particularly into sci-fi, and isn't a particularly avid gamer, but this is one of her favourites!

My wife does not like this game. She loves Dominion and Pandemic. She says this game is just short for her to get her strategy going. I know what she means, but it can be adapted to.

For my wife it is a bit too abstract. She is very visual and the cards despite their symbols meant nothing to her :(. For me I can quickly see ah Mercenaries that is going to give me some military or its an economic card that is going to help me invest or trade, she just sees another card that looks like all the other cards. If she learned what all the symbols were she might enjoy it, chance of me getting her to sit through it again? Not likely is as optimistic as I can be.

I find this game to be very intriguing for me and my wife. We both really enjoy San Juan which seems to be a great precursor to this one. Unfortunately, something about this game doesn't resonate well with her.

I really like it because it plays like a more in-depth version of San Juan with a Sci-Fi theme. Also, I like the VP chip mechanic and the varying victory conditions. IMO, it makes a "race" strategy more valid than in San Juan.

I'm glad your wife enjoys it. Maybe she could give my wife a call!

I wish my wife had taken to it as much as yours. My wife likes the idea of games allowing her to be a part of a story, and our gaming group is awesome enough that we can really immerse ourselves in the theme of many games.

Her issues were the following:

1) WAY too complex. She's not one for many numbers and symbols.
2) Not enough theme. She couldn't see the connections and develop the story between the various cards. Ironically, we play Citadels quite a bit, and we all do a pretty good job developing the story.
3) She says its not accessible, and it's not fun. This, from my normally open and 'try-anything' gamer wife, who is good at picking up rules rather quickly.

I can't figure out whether it was a fault of the game, or the way I explained and taught her the game. Alas, I hope my gaming group enjoys it as much as I do, because this isn't going to be coming off the shelf when it's just the two of us anytime soon.

After reading this thread, I bought this game and I'm trying it with my wife tonight, I really hope she likes it. I had a moment of "ok, this is COOL" while playing a solo game to learn the rules tonight, so I hope she will as well. She's a sci-fi fan, but not really a gamer. She likes Carcassonne, didn't really enjoy the length of Arkham Horror (or the theme truth be told). I think she's on the fence about Starcraft: the Boardgame.

If she ends up enjoying this I might have finally found her gateway game I've been searching for for so long! Wish me luck!

Good luck with your wife tonight!

My girlfriend and I had played only RISK 2210 before RftG. I wanted a good 2 players game and I had bought Race for the Galaxy.

I can't say that she as excited as I am about this game (she doesn't want to play it when she's tired, because she has to think much about the cards she plays), but besides that, it's a very fun game for both of us!

Well, she was quite tired (she's a nurse and works nights, often stays up with the kids the day after she worked a night, so I mean TIRED!).

We played through the game, going through the basics as we played.... she ended up liking the game and kicked my butt pretty handily. She got a really sweet produce/consume cycle going and there was not much I could do about it.

We'll be playing it again soon!

Thanks again for the thread, it seems to have worked out well for me.
