Dominion: Q&A Review
Dominion

Many reviews have already been written about Dominion, so in this review I will only concentrate on a few points which could be of interest to people who still can’t decide whether this game is worth the hype.

What is the replay value of Dominion?

The game consists of 25 action cards, where for each game 10 different set of cards is drawn. This means that each game will probably be quite different. To be honest with you, in my opinion quite different is too subtle of a description. Depending on the cards chosen, a card that seemed to us as a must in a previous game suddenly becomes less useful or sometimes even useless. This forces the player to analyze not only how each card works but also how it works when used with other cards. How can you get bored with a game that is nearly always different?
After presenting the next points you will come to realize that there are other factors that make every game a whole new experience.

Does this game play well with 2, 3 or 4 players?

Dominion plays well with 2, 3 and 4 players. What has to be mentioned is that the strategic aspect completely changes with a different number of players. Strategies used in a 4 player game will surely not help you win with an experienced 2 player gamer and opposite wise. Two player games not only have less VP’s but also take more time to buy the whole set of a card type, whilst in a 4 player game you won’t even realize when the game is finished. Be prepared :).

Is this game any similar to Race for the Galaxy?

It is a card game where combo’s are relevant so we have got a similarity. What I think though, is that this game has less of a luck factor, though I may be mistaken (sorry RftG fans :p ). Another difference which seems relevant is that sometimes RftG seems like a solitaire, whilst Dominion does include interaction. Sometimes the interaction is not as direct as in other games, but sometimes it obviously is. There are a bunch of quite aggressive action cards. On the other hand interaction also involves “forcing” the player to enhance his strategy due to what the other players are doing. You control the game and you control when it will end, at least to some extent. Neither I nor any of the players I have played Dominion with, never felt that it was a solitaire played with more players. Everyone feels the competition and everyone would always try to hurt you if they could (though sometimes its not worth it as it can take away an action which you would like to use).

Would the wife like to play it?

My wife really loves this game. Even when there are aggressive cards which can hurt her strategy she can still build her deck and enjoy building her dominion. So even though this game could be a brain burner, it can also be treated as a light very fun game to play.

Will I like to play it often?

It plays good with different numbers of players.
Each game is a whole new experience.
Each game should not take more that 40 minutes.
It does not take long to set up.

OBVIOSLY YES!!!

Is the Hype justified?

OBVIOSLY YES!!!

Now give me GG….....I want my Dominion badge!!!

I gave you .25geekgold, assuming that you'll say thank you for it :p

Having just played both RftG and Dominion, dominion has WAY less luck. In fact, in Dominion, you all start with the same stuff and you know what you'll be getting. The only actual random element is which cards are in your hand, and when.

Also, you control how good your deck is, because you're the one building it. If your card draws suck, guess whose fault it is :)

I am not convinced there is way less luck. Both have a lot of luck.

Dominion seems to have more to me, actually. Yes. You control what's in your deck. But the timing of what comes up when is huge and that is completely out of your control.

Race you have less control over your hand. But because the cards are multi-function, you have the ability to cycle less useful cards out of your hand by spending them as currency and thus it does not really matter whether they were good or bad. Also, the ability to explore and fish through the deck as needed can mitigate problems with bad draws.

Seems difficult to reach a definitive position here. Presumably some measure such as how frequently a weaker player beats a stronger player would be useful in judging this.

Thanks for the GG :)
After wrting this I'm goin to choose my badge

As to the luck then when you draw a deck that you've built its always a matter of probablility. You should try to build your deck in such a way making the luck factor affect you as little as possible. If it does and you get bad cards, then sometimes theres just nothing you can do about it. If so, you still know the better cards are coming and when they do they'll come together (though this can be bad too sometimes hehehehe).

I haven't played RFTG yet, but I wonder if Dominion's popularity is going to have an adverse effect on race's ratings? If you are comparing apple pies to chocolate pies, its hard to say which is better, but if you are comparing two apple pies, its pretty easy.

Great review, by the way!

Good review. Sadly, no GG from me since I just bought my GeekBadge and am now completely broke. :(

Now my trademark nitpicking.

The key word is "probably". Even though there are many combinations of Action cards offered, the games can quite often play out very similarly. For instance, if there is a Chapel present you are very likely to see a Chapel rush etc. The variability comes from the players themselves and their willingness to not play the "default" strategies but try something new and refreshing.

I would say the replayability in Dominion doesn't come from some "difference" in every game, but in the fact that it's fast and rather addicting. The addictiveness probably comes from the "Slot machine" syndrome of never being completely sure of what the next hand will bring..but who cares. It works.

One thing that you failed to mention is that the learning curve of RftG is MUCH steeper then Dominion's, which might be the deciding factor for many. With Dominion you can literally deal out the cards, make some basic pointers and let the newbies figure out what to do by themselves. With RftG the brain-freeze is unavoidable (do you have a reference card for this reference card?).

IMHO, yes..and no. I would bet quite a lot that after the novelty value wears off, "true" gamers will start finding it too shallow, too fast or will dismiss it as "filler", especially when more "default" strategies crystallize (*cough* chapel *cough*). As for CCG-ers, their obsessive compulsive nature will probably make them drift back towards their favorite money-sink. The "cult of the new"-ers will, well, find something new. Simply put, I don't see this as a typical BGG game.

This doesn't mean Dominion is bad... on the contrary I love this little game. In its niche it is near-perfect and I would put it right next to Settlers, TTR and Carcassonne as one of the better "gateway" games for non-gamers (and would probably proscribe it as an obligatory game for recovering CCG addicts). But I don't think it has much of a staying value THAT high on top rated games list.

P.S. Of course, I reserve the right to abstain from putting my foot in my mouth because I find the interview with the designer quite promising - to paraphrase him, he said that the next expansion will be much more attack-oriented and that the "base game" featured "lighter" cards on purpose, to make learning the game easier, and that we can expect more complext stuff in the future. I am REALLY looking forward to that, especially for more interactive cards.

Never played race, but Dominion does seem to have a large luck factor, particular when chapel & laboratory is on the board. The difference between a 2/5 split and a 3/4 is huge on turn 1.
