MicroHOTT! Game with 5mm dice and Battleground Kingdom cards
To make this very portable version of HOTT:

(everything fits in a poker-sized card tuckbox), I proceeded as follows:

1. I bought a large number of 5mm d6s, which are very inexpensive. I glued pairs of them together to make units: each unit is therefore twice as wide as it is deep, which is close enough for HOTT purposes at this scale.

2. I used the terrain cards from Battleground: Kingdoms. There are 36 cards in the set: 6 of them are plain terrain, 6 have water (and possibly other terrain), 14 have hills (and possibly other terrain), and 10 have "rough going" in various forms. The only thing they're short on is roads. These can be drawn with wet erase markers, if desired, and gently removed with a barely damp cloth when the game is over. The cards do have a plastic coating.

3. I set 100 paces = 5mm, and made simple rulers using outdated business cards. Since a 15mm scale board is 2400 paces deep, using four cards in a 2x2 pattern is a very close approximation to a regulation HOTT board.

4. We write out which dice our armies represent, again on outdated business cards, which fit in the box. In the game illustrated, we were playing the Knights of Queen Gloriana versus the Enchanter's League from de Camp/Pratt's Incomplete Enchanter. I have eight colors of dice, four for each side. If an army has more than four unit types, then you have to use one color twice, but use a different number showing on top. (The purple 2 is a flyer, for example, while the purple 5 is a lurker.) List them all before playing so you don't forget what they are!

5. Generals are shown with the #1 on top - that's always reserved for them. If you have other elements of the same type as a General, use the same colored dice, but with a different number showing - such as the Magicians in this sample game.

6. Hordes use a 6, of course, to show there are lots of them. But if one side has no hordes, they can use 6s for other units, to try to intimidate their opponents into submission. Gloriana's knights look very impressive as 6s, yes?

7. Units have three pairs of numbers showing: those on top (which designate the unit type), those facing the enemy, and those facing your own edge. The latter two faces do not denote unit types, but help determine unit facing: the front of the unit will always be the higher number of these two choices.

8. The players have to agree beforehand how to treat the "Deployment Zones" in the middle of the cards. Since in this game both sides have lurkers, and since the Enchanters stronghold in the book was located in a wooded area, it was decided that all four of those zones are Rough Going, capable of containing lurkers. That can change from game to game, depending on the situation, and could easily be simply good going, or different from card to card. If players cannot agree, dice for it.

9. The stronghold is a small pewter tower with house - the mods, of course, rejected the good side view of it as "too similar", of course, but maybe I'll try again later. It's very cute.

10. You can use post-it notes on the bottom of the cards to hold them together if you find you're moving them when moving the pieces.

[Edit, add:] 11. The range of Shooters is increased in MicroHOTT to 300 paces. (This is because the range of Shooters in 15mm is slightly larger than the 40mm x 40mm "element front square" - space directly to its front - that a unit controls. Because a unit in MicroHOTT is 200 paces wide, I had to increase the range to allow for a Shooter to be outside this area and still be in firing range, as they can be in regular HOTT.)

That's all I can think of - ask questions if I left something out, and have fun with this very portable version of HOTT!

Here are some photos rejected by the mods:

A closeup of the League of Enchanters' card and slightly better angle on the stronghold:

And facing the enemy, the stronghold is clearly visible here. You can also see that the sides of the dice facing the enemy are always the higher number of the lateral sides. You can also tell by the reflection that the cards are plastic coated, and so can take wet-erase marker without ruining them (the mods didn't like the reflection):

I've got a ton of 6mm fantasy miniatures I've never painted. Now you've got my fingers itching...

That would, of course, be much better! My fingers are too clumsy to paint at that tiny scale, alas. In fact, if you look closely at the dice, you'll see my gluing job isn't that neat, either!

I thought of many options before settling on the dice. There are some lovely 5mm x 10mm rectangular beads in four colors that are quite good looking and wouldn't require gluing. But they'd require some way of marking them to denote what units they represented, so I reluctantly rejected that. The hardware store sells some very handsome "square keys" of about the right size - steel, a nice feel to them, a good weight - but aside from the expense, they'd need marking, also.

So, given my lack of artistic talent and cheap frugal nature, I opted for 5mm dice, as I could get a number of different unit types very easily. Not nearly as good looking and mood-creating as figures, though, I admit. Dice also have the advantage of portability: you don't need a separate army of figures for each army type you create, just another business card!

Post some photos if you really do this!

And, BTW, a public thank you to Andrew Gross who kindly supplied me with the Battleground: Kingdoms cards!

Having some 2mm scale miniatures would be close enough in size.

given how important fiddly geometry is in HoTT i guess it would not work.
