What setup are you using and how often do you win?
Hi,

I was wondering what expansions / parts of them are you using, do you have any special house rules and how often do you win with that setup? Also how many investigators are you using?

I knew from a few test games that just the base game was a little too easy for our group, so I purchased The King in Yellow with the base game and went to town with it. Yes, with the Tattered King the game got "a bit" more difficult. Namely so that I think we managed to win one game out of ten. Then Dunwich Horror finally arrived (had ordered it like two months earlier) and let us of the hook. We had to find the balance but in the end our setup was so that with three investigators we used Dunwich without the herald. With four we included the herald and with five we increased the monster per gate to two just like the manual suggested.

With this the games could go either way, but we were still winning a bit much for my taste, lets say about 3 out of 5 times. Our house rules are 1) gate destinations are unseen until someone goes through them and 2) we have banned Mandy for being spoilsport. We have never beaten AO in final battle but often we do not need to even try. Especially expansion chararacters are so tough and many times start the game with at least 3 clues, that games tend to be a bit on an easy side.

I just received Innsmouth and have begun testing with multiple expansions at once ( http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article/3578200#3578200 my new setup), but haven't really been able to play much yet.

Arkham Horror really looses a lot of flavour if it does not feel like an uphill battle, so I would like to hear you're experiences with it.

Thanks,

After about 8 sessions with the basic game (4 players) we won the last 3 games and decided that it was getting a bit easy so added Dunwich.

We've played 2 games with Dunwich and won both times, in fact the Dunwich board has been hardly used which in a sense was a little disappointing. In the first game the Dunwich Horror did wake but just before we closed and sealed the 6th gate, thus it was never a threat. I am tempted to house rule that you can't win while the Dunwich Horror is in play, (unless you have fought and defeated the the big guy).

Next time I think I am also going to use a tip from these boards about ensuring more Dunwich Exp. Mythos cards come up which may force players and monsters to the Dunwich board.

I can only see one problem with your first house rule in that you can't then come back to any gate of the same type on the board, which can be a useful tactic.

If you're looking for another anti-dilution variant, this one looks pretty good.

We use all expansions. No house rules, I think they're stupid.

We win, I guess, about one out of five plays.

My regular game group uses all the big box expansions. We include everthing from those expansions. There are usually 6 players. Our win rate is around 40%.

The only house rule we had been using was for Sister Mary. We played that she could spend two clue tokens to reroll if she lost her blessing during upkeep. Now with her personal story, we don't use that house rule anymore.

We play the base game with Dark Pharaoh at the moment. Usually just 2 investigators, but occasionally 3.

I'd say we win about 50% of the time.

Currently we're doing whatever setup the Arkham League tells us to use. After that we'll probably do just Innsmouth for awhile. After that who knows? Whatever strikes our fancy I guess.

I own everything: AH, DH, KH, IH, DP, KY, BG.

First off, I don't play with DP except for the 7 Allies (and the Arkham Encounter cards that grant them by name), the 3 dual-color Gate Cards, a few Spells that I liked, and 3 Exhibit cards to be chosen from randomly whenever Sarah Danforth is in play.

Most games I play are 4 Investigators, even if I'm solo. I have played up to 6 and down to 1, but I dislike less than 3 and more than 5. Rookies may choose their Investigator, but everyone else draws randomly. Ancient One and Herald (if decided upon) random, unless we want to play a theme (like Hastur/King in Yellow with KY Herald).

Most House Rules are on hold while Innsmouth is "new". (The Personal Stories seem to have wiped a few of them out.) The only one I can think of currently is the Ally/Citizen decks. 11-card Ally Deck for Ma's Boarding House, 23-card Citizen Deck for any Encounter that specifically names an Ally not at Ma's. Discard 1 and 2 cards respectively when Terror Track rises.

I play with just about every Investigator (small) card available, although I have nip/tucked here and there (such as no game-ending items, spells, or Missions). I always use the Injury/Madness decks, and (so far) Personal Stories. I use all monsters available except for the 3 BG Dark Young (which I only use when the Black Goat Herald is used).

Ancient One (big) cards I am more choosy about. I tend to stay in the one-board-expansion-one-card-expansion camp, and will only use the big cards in those expansions. And I've been pretty consistant about switching out for new material as it became available:

Combos: win ratio
AH only: way more than half
AH/DP: about half
AH/DH: little less than half
AH/DH/DP: didn't play this very long, but I can't remember losing the few times I did.
AH/KY: little less than half
AH/DH/KY: same as AH/DH/DP
AH/KH: about half
AH/KH/KY: about a quarter
AH/BG: little more than half
AH/KH/BG: little less than half
AH/IH: 4 out of 7
AH/IH/BG: 1 out of 3

My conclusions: Dunwich does not mix well with more than just the base game. Kingsport and Innsmouth both mix well with one extra card expansion. Ancient Ones and Herald combos chosen randomly tend to balance within my win/loss ratios.

(Congratulations if anyone bothered to read all that. Such a nerd am I.)

We are currently playing with the base game, DH and COtDP, winning around 50% with 4 investigators. We use a house rule whereby the Dunwich Mythos cards are in a separate stack and we roll a dice for which deck to pick from - 'success' lol means the Dunwich stack, failure the base+COtDP stack.

When we start using KiY the next act cards will go with the DH ones. I have seen some suggestions that you have a couple of stacks and alternate, or 1 in 3, but that adds a certainty I feel you shouldn't have about what might come up next.
