I'm new to ASL, and I'm picking up pieces where available as I get into the game. Last week, I ordered Partisans and Pegasus Bridge from MMP to take advantage of their closeout prices on the two games. I opened the old Avalon Hill shipping box they shipped the games to me in to find one of the oddest choices for box format/size I've seen.

Looking at all the the pictures in various locations on the web this APPEARED to me to be a more or less standard bookcase box. Instead, it is almost like a large poster. Much taller and wider than I expected but very shallow. Is it fair to assume that all of the HASL's (except the newer Valor of the Guards) are packaged like this? Are the two DASL modules in similar boxes?

Anyone know if there's a reason AH went with such an odd box size? Maybe a dominating FLGS shelf presence?

That is the size of all the HASL. My guess, overall, is that they went with that size due to the larger maps contained in HASL.

Hi Jason,

Red Barricades, KGP I and II and Pegasus Bridge were all in these box formats. It may have had to do with how the maps were done/folded for these big games more than anything else. Hedgerow Hell and Streets of fire (the Deluxe ASL modules) were also in these formats do to the boards being larger.

Oops, sorry for the duplicate post. Was on the phone and in the middle of typing so I didn't see skippen's post.

Actually, Valor of the Guards - ASL Historical Module Number 7 is in the standard MMP "bookcase size" box, as are Operation: Watchtower - ASL Historical Study 1 and Operation Veritable Historical Study - ASL Historical Study 2. As was mentioned, a few of the past HASL modules were in the larger flat boxes (also including Tarawa). I'm not sure why the larger boxes were used, maybe to differentiate the product on shelves. When I bought them at the store I remember thinking the large box was pretty cool. The maps may have been folded differently and required a larger box, I should compare them when I have a chance.

It's basically the same AH box footprint they have used for "flatbox" releases (vs. "bookcase" type) since the 1960s -- so it's not new for them. All the AH HASLs and DASLs are in this type of box.

The newest MMP ones (like VOTG) are switching to another size.

The large boxes are cool but they're a pain if you want to trade one of them. The shipping cost is higher and it's more difficult to find a suitable box.:p
