What’s it about?‘Boggle’ is a word game with a time element. 16 character dices are shuffled in a 4x4 grid and the players have to find as much words as possible within a 3 minute time span. Words found by more than one player don’t count and longer words count for more points.
Player with the most points, wins.
How does it work?Sixteen dice with characters are shuffled and placed in a 4x4 grid. This grid is simultaneously revealed to all players. Now the 3-minute timer starts and all players write down as many words as they can find in the grid. All the letters of a word need to be adjacent on the grid (vertical, horizontal or diagonal) and one character can not be used more than once per word.
After the timer runs out, all words are compared. If more than one player has a certain word, this word does not generate points for neither player. So only unique words will generate points. The longer the word, the more points it will generate.
Winner is he/ she who after a predefined amount of rounds has the most points.
Where is the fun?In ‘Boggle’, one of the drawbacks of other word games (e.g. Scrabble) is resolved : there is no downtime. All players are simultaneously playing. The other great thing about Boggle is that no matter how long you stare at the grid, another players has always found a word, you didn’t see.
Why should I like this?- Fast play
- Little downtime
- No luck involved
Why shouldn’t I like this?- It’s a word game
- No short- or long-term thinking
Final verdict‘Boggle’ is a fun word game. Due to the time element and the simultaneous play, it is nothing like the well-known Scrabble. This makes Boggle a short filler, that can be played in almost any group, even with people that normally don’t like word games. But don’t expect any tactics or strategy.
