Hi,

Could someone please indicate how long the basic game goes for. The colombia game website says it could be completed in an hour but some confirmation of this would be appreciated.

Re:How Long does the base game play
nnf1 (#89341),

For the standard game -- using 2 maps and 2 armies with 100 point builds -- an hour is definitely realistic. It's certainly impacted by your play style and your opponent (someone who agonizes over every single decision can add quite a bit of extra time to any game).

Granted, the very first time you play may take a bit longer, as you double check some rules or get the feel for the interplay of mechanics, but once you're familiar with the system, the game plays surprisingly quick.

Most of the scenarios with 2 maps can be played in an hour or less. More maps will add more time, but once you know the rules, you can usually guesstimate the length of time for a given scenario by skimming through it.

Hope that helps!

We found it took more than an hour and was not very good.

Surprise Attack at Chris Farrell's Wizard Kings page is much better:

It took us about two hours.

Re:How Long does the base game play
My usual opponents and I tend to be fairly slow and ponderous with this one, so it usually takes about 2 hours for a normal-type scenario. However, I've only played one game thus far with the new rules (1.5). It wasn't the basic scenario, but it seemed to move along nicely. Still, I'd plan on about 2.5 hours on your first game.

Another good introductory scenario is [a="http://www.columbiagames.com/resources/8500/orcdies.shtml"]If an Orc Dies in a Forest[/a]. It plays on one map, goes fairly quickly, and is a good one to get familiar with the movement rules, terrain bonuses, and all that. However, the Orcs have a significant advantage, so the Elf player should know going in that they are likely to lose. (It's a good one to get someone into the game by letting them be the Orcs.)

Also, for the basic scenario, you can put a bit of a time limit on things by agreeing on a set number of turns. We find 10-12 makes for a good 2-hour game.

A basic game, 4 players, 4 maps, no scenario, 100 GPs each...
We usually play from 9 pm till 12 or 1 am. At that point we're usually to tired to go on :snore:
Usually, victory conditions are not achieved, the player with the most VPs wins.
So if you want to cut down the necessary playtime, pick a scenario :)

Ack! Wrong message board format.

Here is the link to the "If an Orc Dies..." scenario

Should the above not work, how does one create a hyperlink on here without displaying the whole long URL?

Columbia is currently reworking the rules of the game (stacking limit of 4, 3 rounds of combat max, armies can't retreat during 1st round of combat, e.t.c).

It looks like the new rules will make the game much better...

Are any of these changes being seriously considered? All of them would, in my opinion, make the game much worse. Limiting battles to 3 rounds of combat especially would be a complete disaster.

Let me know where somebody is proposing these things so I can try to kill them.

All

Our very first game with the basic suggested armies (100GP) took just a touch over 1.5 hours with my 13 year old. We had a few questions about hexsides (how much forest or mountain was enough to cause the 1-unit limit - needed the full width to limit) and also whether fliers were pinned by ground units (not mentioned as an exception, so they were). I'd expect it to come down to an hour now that we're more familiar with the rules etc. and how the system pans out.
