The Past and Future of Boardgame News
An ongoing saga! Or at least a short story. For those interested in the fate of BGN, I've posted a history of what went wrong: http://boardgamenews.blogspot.com/2010/12/past-and-future-of...

The short version: BGN will return in January 2011, if not sooner.

Eric,
I am really sorry to hear of the problems you have experienced. BoardGameNews is a fantastic resource - especially the convention previews - and it is good to hear that it will return. Thanks for taking time to explain what has happened.

I always thought that BGN would be a great addition folded into BGG. Here's hoping.

How would that work? BGNG? Seems like an acronym for something else altogether.

Thanks for the good wishes, all!

Good grief, no! It would largely sink without trace. I value BGN for its news and information and not for its "community". The two are completely different and should stay that way.

Put BGN on the first page of your QuickBar if you want to link them!

BGG sorely needs an accurate "upcoming games" feature, which is exactly what BGN does. I would love to see the two sites merge, but if they never do then at least I hope you keep up the good work on your own at BGN.

I personally prefer BGN's environment where there is a lot less drama, sniping and trolling. I look forward to its return as a separate entity from BGG.

Looking forward to the return. Hopefully the new thing will keep the unnecessary smarts away from the thing all the readers hammer on.

I've personally noticed that Drupal tends to be a huge resource hog, especially with for instance the search system (seeing the massive SQL query that thing produces makes me wonder why sites even use it).

Whenever a page is loaded, Drupal sends more info along than the page actually needs, so that developers can freely add or remove the content from being displayed. This, however, doesn't mean the content isn't actually loaded, so it still takes up resources.

I can't say anything about your site specifically, since the first time I heard about boardgamenews was when the website wasn't available anymore. I'd suggest not using Drupal, but I guess that's advise you can't do anything with. I hope things will end up working fine eventually though!

If you ever find a programmer who will help you out, I suggest using a light weight framework like CodeIgniter.

Good luck!

It is sadly often the case that people come to working on php-based web sites (or in fact any web sites) from a design background and treat the actual serving infrastructure as an irrelevance to be copied & pasted away and ignored.

This works (or doesn't break) for a typical low-traffic site, but leaves you in a fairly untenable position when you try to scale. Some folks are forced to do all sorts of crazy things to try and avoid paying off this technical debt, see Facebook.
